You know how I asked for suggestions about edible gifts to bring home for family/friends at the weekend, and Craggy/others suggested Fitzbillies?

Yeah, well, I'm now sitting in my room writing an essay with 8 chelsea buns just sitting there. This is absolute TORTURE. RELIEVE ME OF THIS PAIN!!1!

I'll happily take all of them off your hands at no cost to you  :ninja:

He's a really sound and genuinely nice guy. He was a helper with our Geography Sutton Trust visit last year, and he made the whole thing that bit better. I was really chuffed when he recognised my face at Downing's freshers fair. Really happy to see him as CUSU President.

Yeah, that was the impression I got. It would be very easy for me to dislike him, but he wasn't oily and managery at all, which was refreshing

Does anyone know if they have plug sockets in normal class on East Coast Mainline trains? I think it might be only business class that does...

I'm pretty sure that they do, yes. Or at least, they did when I took the train from London to Aberdeen.

I should not have inverted my day-night cycle.

Ah, been there. Worst it got with me was going to bed at 7am, getting up at 1730, but that was in the vac.

Grr, you got there first :p:

Congratulations

You could take that very far and suggest, for instance, that no student should make any noise whatsoever in their room as it may in some way detriment the experience of their neighbours to a very small degree. The majority of decisions in a college will result in some people losing out.

Bold is why that argument isn't valid. We aren't talking about people being midly inconvenienced by this, we are talking about some people, even if it is a small minority, being very badly affected by it.

I'm so fed up with the unsocial student lot in Cambridge. No one wants to go out and party, totally depressing.

See I find people who want to do nothing but go out and party depressing and very very dull. There is such a massive amount of stuff to do in Cambridge that I don't understand how people can waste their time by partying. I'm busy almost every night this term and I've never been to a club in Cambridge, rarely go to the college bar and hardly ever to a pub, except if I'm sessioning there.

People are different and at Cambridge you're likely to find a greater range than at other universities.

FadeToBlackout
I have a dictaphone you could borrow if you like...?

Don't tempt me, I haven't worked out whether it's ethical yet :p:

In other news, I feel terrible, only just dragged myself to lectures today, didn't get anything out of it, have no food so will have to drag myself to Hall, have a supervision at quarter past three for which I have done virtually no work and don't feel up to doing any now and am basically pretty damn miserable. I'm going to email my supervisor to see whether I can duck out of it and if so spend the day in bed, reading or watching Laurel and Hardy and hoping that I feel better for Ceilidh Band this evening.

I've completely lost all motivation, which has never really happened before. It's just all gone. I've forgotten why I'm here :s-smilie:
apart from ryder & amies, does anyone know where else one may be able to bulk-order society hoodies?
I just booked tickets to a free viewing of a Ukranian film at the Picturehouse next Friday. Sounds interesting, particularly for Russianists perhaps?

The Living: As millions died in Holodomor, the 1932-33 terror-famine in Ukraine, Cambridge's own Gareth Jones fought to expose the tragedy to the world. The Living presents witness accounts by people who experienced Holodomor as young people or children, and survived. The director, Serhiy Bukovsky, suceeds in conveying not only grief and horror, but also these people’s personality, sense of humor, and wisdom. Winner of the 2009 Grand Prize of Geneva and the 2009 Award for Best Documentary at the Yerevan International Film Festival.

Followed by a discussion with Mr Nigel Linsan Colley, Dr Margaret Siriol Colley, and Rory Finnin, Lecturer in Ukrainian Studies at the University Cambridge.

Should have gone to Harvard, they work hard and play hard.

Here students work hard and work hard and are boring.

Yeah, your own fault really. Shows you didn't properly do your research before deciding which university you would spend at least three years of your life at.

Besides, I know quite a lot of people who go out and party often, say at least 3 times a week, maybe more often than that. So unless by 'going out and partying' you mean taking a train to London and dancing/drinking in expensive clubs till the early morning (which is a rather costly thing to do and hence rare), I fail to understand how you can't find a decently sized group of people to go out and party with.

/edit: Maybe I'm actually overreacting a bit, sorry. My point still stands though - surely it cannot be that hard to find people that party?

There's one on Pembroke Street that does college kit. I forget the name though. And Talking Tees on Bridge Street does hoodie printing.

Looking for ward to the fireworks tonight though! Anyone going? The Duck is going to be moored just down from the Fort St George, if anyone wants to pop by!

What time is it? I have a badminton match at St Luke's Barn at 9pm.

It could be lupus
Sure was. First night I could actually be bothered waiting in the queue so I am not sure how cheesy it normally is, but still a good night. I noticed a lot of the drinking societies were out last night also

I wouldn't have bothered waiting in the queue, but luckily had friends that were at the front already. :ninja:

It does seem to be harder to find enough people to go out this year (compared to last); I had to tag along with Freshers last night. Was still fun though.

The principal is the same, only the magnitude differs.

The principle is directly affected by the magnitude. The magnitude matters.

I just made my second claim in two years, so yeh. I'd say so. Also loads of people get robbed

I wonder if anyone can help? I need to look at an article on JSTOR for work (and James needs to have a look at some things for his interview), but as neither of us are technically part of the university anymore we can't get access. Any ideas how we can get in? Perhaps we could borrow someone's account for a few days? :flutter:
Obviously the most sensible thing is for somebody to go with you to a department, not college, libary and log you into their PDF account. You won't need to log in to JStor, but will automatically be logged in via the network.

So if some people react negatively to it and some people react well to it that makes it acceptable? I'd say that the fact that some people react negatively to it should mean that it shouldn't be used, even if overall more people react well than badly (which is debateable). Humans aren't numbers, you can'tdeal with averages. It may be good for the majority, but being unpleasant for the minority isn't acceptable.
Exactly
ukebert
I've been trying to think about how it might work, in terms of legality and in terms of practicality. I also don't have a recording device.
You can borrow mine?

In other news we are affiliate to CUSU still in an unanimous vote  I was actually very impressed with Tom Chigbo, he came across extremely well defending his position.

The email above was also raised and it's going to be taken up with Dr P and also with CUSU.
I can't tell you what brilliant news this is! I was so annoyed by not being able to go last night, as I feel so strongly on the matter. But I couldn't get the essay done on time.

I received one just this evening (after having spent the whole day away at an open day in Oxford) and it just knocked the wind out of my sails. I feel like a naughty schoolboy, having received a 2.2 along with 40% of other students taking MVST 1B. I discussed it with my DoS a couple of weeks ago and felt I had moved on after being very disappointed after, I had felt, working hard and having got through second year MVST here, and have already made changes to my working life to hopefully do better this year. For myself. Not for Peterhouse.

To put a student in front of what is effectively a panel of 3 senior fellows right at the end of Week 5 is just bullying. It certainly doesnt motivate me.

I dont know which college model they are trying to emulate. Being strict hasnt exactly worked for Christs this year.

yours, back after a long absence,

winj96
Nice to see you online again winj :awesome: And in the Cambridge Chat Thread too! Sorry to hear that college mistreated you as well. They make me so angry!

Grr, you got there first :p:
Massive congrats :five:
Zoedotdot
You could, but the point is that I'm not really taking it far... I think that anyone would agree that the above example isn't really practical, but asking for senior members of a college not to bully their students isn't really quite such a stretch :p:
Precisely!

Grrr, the SPS Society are telling me I'm not a member when I paid for membership in Lent term last year
Yeh, I think I'll find the same. If you want, I can buy you a formal ticket at £5.35 for that evening so that you don't have to go through the society.

So are we getting this TSR formal booked? I would suggest one of the upper year Emma students do it because I'm worried our catering dept. might not take us freshers seriously.

Or maybe I'm just para :o:

Yes, that would be best, but between myself and James, we'll need to access it several times over the course of the week. Wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone that much! However, I think we have a solution. The computers in the UL's Digital Resources Area are automatically logged into Jstor. And we both still have DRA accounts that work.
I decided that I wouldn't email my supervisor and would go to blag through my supervision. It is not going to be nice though.

I haven't spoken to catering at all before, but I suppose I could try. It would be probably helpful if you could send me a list of (real) names of guests attending.
Right.

I'm in the UL.

One hour to find the Jstor stuff I need.

Will PM you Francois's email address, I doubt I'm allowed to post it on here. I would book it but as I'm not going it would be a bit strange. Are you going to be able to get enough people in as guests of members of the college? If not, then put my name down with a couple of guests and someone can pretend to be me, cheques in envelopes in my pigeon hole

Am I right in thinking there is some form of public fireworks this evening? I'm fed up with comparing pictures of goats for my dissertation.
