Ah that may have been the problem, I sent the email to Rachel Hilditch, so she is probably not there...

Thanks a lot =)

Looking forward to see you all

Are we on The Thread not good enough for you now? You've resorted to CamChat  I'm disappointed.

Won't be long before you guys all migrate here, and I thought this thread moved fast last year...

Does anyone here know of somewhere, college, B&B, wherever, I might be able to stay in Cambridge from the 24th of September until the Fitz residence period starts on the 3rd of October?

I have been cast in an opera at Catz, didn't find out until after term ended, and it appears to be too late to get in touch with the Fitz domestic office so I am going to be homeless. D:

Couldn't think where to ask but here. :frown:

My cousin recently visited with a schoolfriend (they're 16) and stayed at a youth hostel on Tennison road (near the train station) I'll facebook her and ask for the details.

So... great fatty acid chain avatar you've got there

lol, he hasn't replied yet :p:

hmmmmm  - but you're forgiven for at least noticing  - and for attempting to sciencify the thread up a little bit, 'spect

thankyoo, indeed they are - thought i'd live up to my nick (BioChemManiac :p: ) as well as to reflect my studenty escapades  - but for those that have limited/no chemical knowledge they just read "ho ho ho", which is mildly amusing

Lol. If you saw how much maths there was in this thread throughout the course of this year, you'd appreciate what a massive risk I took in even creeping up to the border of the arts/science divide :p:

How useless am I? I didn't even see that version  Does it worry you that I first applied for biological sciences... :p:

LOL fair enough, haha real shame i missed out on the maths banter, must have been totally wild - yeah i was having enough trouble with the my own course, gash cambridge making us choose 4 options, can they not see that everyone would have at least one module which they hate, sigh..... - ah well those days are long behind

well... remembering from offer holders '08 banter, twas more or less 50/50 arts/sciences, non?? but most of them have apparently disappeared off the TSR radar without any sort of comeback in sight :frown:

hehe, well actually that comment was not at all with reference to you, who apparently retains pretty impressive but for her purposes pretty useless chemistry knowledge - i meant like those who ermmmm i dunno... don't know what the formula for water is or something (lol, they actually asked this on beauty and the geek years ago (i was obv flicking thru the channels when my brain detected the words "chemical formula", engaging a "stop and watch for jokes" reflex) - anyways, yeah they asked this )

ooooh and a quote from a guy in our class at college (in yr 12 i think): "i wonder if there is such a thing as solid water..." - classics @ oxford, mind, would explain it

Yeh, in retrospect I'm not sure how I managed to convince myself that I'd like Natsci. I think I never did actually. I think I realised that I'd probably be fine on a straight Biological Science course anywhere else but would pretty much fail 1A here. How on earth I thought I could possibly pass even 'Elementary Maths for Beginners' (or whatever it was) let alone Chemistry, I do not know  Still its amazing what you can fool yourself into believing if you really want something (ie coming to Cambridge)

I suspect alot of triposes have that risk though. Like most people in PPS are strongly disgruntled by at least one paper in first year, because the four we do are simply so drastically different from eachother. After that its fine, but a year of essays coming out of your ears is no small undertaking :s-smilie:

Its true we have a good mix, however each year there's always one prevalent subject group which dominates the conversation if it turns to work. Last year it was Philosophers, of which we had four or five of at one time. This year its mathmos, and obviously the Physcis, Compscis and engineers can blend in with that...

I was dire at Chemistry. I still remember most of my Bio though, and that actually still is useful.

Bless.
Does anybody know how much cash colleges are willing to hand out to finance dissertation research, if at all? Of course, I expect it to vary from college to college, yet does a system even exist whereby funding can be sought? I ask, seeing as my research will cost in the region of £600-1000 (these are samples of ceramic material for compositional analysis).

I am now thoroughly awake yet without sleep, having ruined my body clock entirely. This is not good, seeing as I have an early morning appointment to make ...

From anecdotal reports, its all down to the discretion of your Senior Tutor :dontknow: Peterhouse is quite good with stuff like that. I'm not sure they'd give you £600 but they'd probably offer four or five. Just depends whether Caius is skimpt.

Fixed Assets
Gonville and Caius: £127,401,607
Peterhouse: £171,887,000

Ok... so we're richer. But its not like Caius is poor. Won't know till you ask though :p:

And yeh, totally with you on the sleep issue. 'Fortunately' I've just developed a migraine which justifies taking the uber-codeine-pills which will knock me out in five minutes.

Jajajaj I'm ever so sorry for having disappointed all of you but I just thought that actual students at sidney might have a better idea of who's there and who wasn't. :o:

Argh! I hate how housekeeping/maintenance/anybody-who-feels-like-it can just open my door at any moment of the day and walk in and pretend not to have been conscious of the fact that I may have been in bed, in pyjamas, asleep in spite of the obvious bin with rubbish placed outside of the door :hmpf:

I'll just have to go cap in hand to the ST, i imagine. The kind of analysis that i'm doing is really going to benefit from a large sample size, so perhaps i can convince them of this. Well, i've hardly asked for much so far.

I think that's all that anybody in Cambridge does, when it comes to this sort of subject specific request. If it helps I know that in architecture students often need alot of financial support to purchase materials. scarlet ibis said she really struggled because Selwyn had no money to give but architects at richer colleges were able to get loads from their colleges on several occasions. This suggests that the type of thing you need money for is likely to be received favourably.
Woo, taking some work colleagues punting tonight!

GOsh, but I do rather enjoy punting, showing off my l33t skillz.
