I've been reading for 12 hours, and now I'm starting the essay :banghead:

:argh:

Hmmm, do I go to a YA open day at Goldman Sachs next Wednesday or go to the three classes I have on that day? I'm almost certain that I want to do law rather than finance, but they already have a YA program in place with a Moscow office, and it would be just as huge an opportunity as the discussion I'm having with the law firm... But then, I've already missed 2 out of 4 SPAV classes this term because of illness, I think my teacher might have babies if I miss another...

Well... Goldman Sachs generates poverty, and classes = education and good marks... :hmmmm: *guesses alex will reply first* :awesome:

Agh. I just saw a Christmas advert, coupled with ******* decorations in Sainsbury's. You go away for a few days and this happens. I'm going to listen to David Karsten Daniels until I want to throw myself out of a window, just to compensate for it.
Yeh, noticed the first last night and it put me in a bad mood! The time I least want to know that Christmas is approaching is when I still have a giant load of essays to be doing. I generally prefer to delude myself that I have loads of time left to do them.

****!

Now there are 4 days with equal popularity for our end of term meal! I suspect that people's plans will change towards the end of term though, as more things get decided, so we'll leave off making a decision until nearer the time. Please, if your availability does change, can you update it, so that the info I have is up to date? thanks
I think you chose the wrong doodle poll. There's one that lets people put 'yes', 'no' or 'if need be' for every option, so that if there's a tie you can still judge by the number of 'if need be's.

Oh I have done so. But because I'm soft, I've reposted the answer as well... :o:
No sympathy from me then!

In return to your video of someone playing amazingly on your instrument, here is mine :p:

The time signatures are pretty complex. It's like listening to a benign version of Math Core .

Well I''m hopelessly immoral and selfish and would just quite like to make some money for myself when I'm older, so the morality of Goldman Sachs doesn't bother me :p: Wondering whether to go was just a moment of madness really... I want to do something law related, but I was feeling sad and desperate because it's a huge thing to organise and the person who was meant to be getting back to me hasn't yet :frown:

haha, although actually I just saw "alex" when skimming through and would've otherwise missed the outrageous statement. :p: However, if you mean "relative poverty", then yes you're right - by increasing inequality Goldman Sachs would "generate poverty". Although that is not to say that society as a whole is not better off with investment banks than without.

I'm sure it will come together. These things never go according to plan (speaking as somebody who always does the utmost to prepare in advance), but it still sorts itself out. Just focus on the work and don't let it stress you.

I'm trying to do the same while waiting for my second referee to provide the reference so I can apply

What does the YA stand for?

I'm glad you agree. Unfortunately we don't have the good fortune to conceive of a modern world without investment banks, so its impossible to judge the second issue.

Year Abroad, one presumes. MML student.

You can do an academic year abroad at GS?

You can do a YA working at GS abroad using your foreign language(s), which is the aim of the YA. It doesn't have to be 'academic' as such. You don't have to be studying at a university, you don't have to be language assistanting in a school. Lots of people do do that, mind.

Edit: Presumably Goldman Sachs are sponsoring or offering work placements abroad. The year abroad is for speaking the language and living in a foreign country. You can study if you want but you don't have to.

Isn't the working langauge at all GS offices going to be English?

Presumably a translator doesn't hurt...

When is it, what songs would I be singing, and do you have the sheet music? I may actually be up for it, but seriously you don't know how bad I am - "wasn't a great singer" would be a very generous assessment, "is worse than mediocre" would probably be more accurate. :sadnod:

Next Monday night. I haven't really thought too much about it since I didn't think I'd be getting anyone to sing, so really whatever you'd like to do (as long as there's an acoustic guitar in there somewhere :P). I was thinking of maybe doing a mashup of crap pop music and songs you wouldn't normally expect to be covered a) acoustically and b) by guys, not gals. So, think Britney, My Humps .etc. Maybe switch up the lyrics a little and make it funny. Just an idea really.
You don't have to do anything if you don't want to, but I'd be happy to play in the background for you if you did.
I have just looked at the money I have left in my accounts, and am not liking the shape they are in, despite the fact that I really have not spent that much according to my spreadsheet. Its probably because I am waiting for a check to clear to set up my Abbey account...

Do you mean GS in particular, or just the fact it's a capitalist financal corporation?

I know (almost) how you feel - even I was briefly tempted by it, & I want to study next year! I think it's the the ready-made equation of CV points + moneys + no effort in organising YA = why not?... but you'll regret it later on, when you realise you really wanted to be doing something else. Probably. I hope. That's what I'm banking on anyway :/
I was indeed talking about my Year Abroad, and we do have the option of working, studying or teaching, or a combination of all three. There's no harm in going via the big companies, particularly because I'm going to Russia, and therefore need that little bit of extra support with visas and even practical things like accommodation, because my Russian isn't anywhere near as good as my Spanish. It also helps to go for a big firm because they're more likely to pay you, and I need the money to be able to even go on the YA in the first place!

The working language in the office of the law firm that I would really really really like to work at is a mixture of English and Russian, which is why the person organising it wanted to put me to work on a big translation project with a Russian person, so that I'd still have plenty of exposure to Russian. If you're not going to have lots of exposure to the foreign language the YA office won't approve your plans.

Meh, it's all so complicated :frown: I started the ball rolling on this in May last year because I knew it would get out of hand, and an interview and a test translation and 6 months later I'm still waiting for a final decision :frown:

Tell me more about the shadowing scheme :p:

Is it just Emma or a uni-wide thing? How much time we will be spending with our shadows. Will our shadows actually do some work and do we help them (I won't mind this)

I'm quite interested because I'm in a small subject and if I don't sign up there won't be many places for shadows to computer science! :yep:

It's a uni wide thing  You don't actually spend all that much time with the shadows, they arrive on a Thursday and leave on a Saturday, and you only really spend Friday with them. They won't do any work but they will follow you around for a day. My shadow got marooned by snow last year so I haven't actually done it before, you might be better asking Craggy as I know she has!

Are you the person who just emailed me? I'll put you on the list ) If you know any Mathmos btw, please encourage them to apply... As a CompSci you could well end up with a Mathmo shadow, as there's a lot of demand for it and not many people volunteering!

I'm not  but I'll send you an email now.

And  at getting a Mathmo shadow. I don't actually go to any Mathmo lectures but I suppose it's better than nothing.
