It must be a nightmare trying to arrange everything for the YA.

We got an email about German summer school scholarship things the other day, so I'm just looking through loads of different courses on the website, thinking "do I really want to even do this?" It's so hard to tell one course from another. I guess I ought to just flip a coin between the two German cities I really want to go to and get a form of 'interest' handed in. It's not like it commits you to anything, but I'd still like to do things properly.
This shadowing thing sounds interesting. Whats involved?

CUSU Shadowing Scheme 2010 - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Shadowing Scheme brings Year 12 students from schools without a tradition of top university entry to Cambridge for three days in February. Prospective students come to Cambridge on the Thursday afternoon and stay until Saturday lunchtime. They will spend time with a current undergraduate, studying a subject they are considering studying at University.

The 2010 Shadowing Scheme will take place on:

Thursday 28 - Saturday 30 January 2010
Thursday 4 - Saturday 6 February 2010
Thursday 11 - Saturday 13 February 2010

If you're interested in taking a shadow to your lectures and showing them what life is like here then please sign up to help out. You only have to commit to one weekend and it really does make a huge difference to the Year 12s!

I think to apply you contact your college JCR access officer.

I have a midday deadline and am only mildly drunk. Hopefully the random squiggles will turn out to be maths in the morning.

Orthogonally*, I have been added to a chess ladder. I have been added to the bottom of a chess ladder. I don't remember being told that I would be added to a chess ladder. After the squash ladder this is like deja vu all over again.

Didn't you lose to some schoolchildren a while ago, though?
I'm not good enough to lose to schoolchildren.
alex_hk90
I'm not looking forward to playing them now.
Clare may well have had some better players when you played them. I lost more than 50% more points in the first two games than I did in the last two matches though, so I'd be inclined to say that Queen's 3rds are better, even if my performance in the first game was bad enough to end the career of my third racket of the term.

*Not that drunk.

Haha fantastic, a shadow would love my timetable. 7.45am supervision- they would love that.

I doubt they would be allowed though to go to the dissections

Or they just sign you up without giving you a choice in the matter...

According to Zoe, no. They just go to your lectures for a day.

If what you says really were to happen we all have to be paedo-checked first

lol, you might anyway. I once volunteered for a mentoring scheme type thing and they wanted to run a criminal background check.

Do you mean GS in particular, or just the fact it's a capitalist financal corporation?

Financial agencies and multinational coroporations in general. But if there was anything specific to say about GS it would be because it belonged to this class of firm and behaved in they way they do.

No :lolwut:

You have to get a CRB check, and the shadow is never allowed in the same room alone with you. They get their own room supplied by the college. There are some CUSU run social events for them to go, including a formal on the Thursday night. You try to take them to some other social stuff on the Friday, but with no alcohol. And you try to take them to any supervisions and your lectures. If they're not in your subject, then ask a friend who is (they're allowed to go along with somebody who hasn't got CRB because its a public situation) I had a problem where none of my lectures were on Fridays last year, and the only one I had was on Qualitative Research Methodology at 4 on the Thursday  So I took her to that, and then took her to a first year Politics lecture on the Friday and organised to have a supervision that she could join me for on the Friday. And I took her to the library and gave her some easy and interesting first year texts to read while I did some work.

Are you the person who just emailed me? I'll put you on the list ) If you know any Mathmos btw, please encourage them to apply... As a CompSci you could well end up with a Mathmo shadow, as there's a lot of demand for it and not many people volunteering!

Huh, I should tell my friends. Although next term, second year mathmos only have one lecture on Fridays...

I have just looked at the money I have left in my accounts, and am not liking the shape they are in, despite the fact that I really have not spent that much according to my spreadsheet. Its probably because I am waiting for a check to clear to set up my Abbey account...

Rule of the Universe that there is ALWAYS less money in your account than you think that there should be. In fact I was convinced that there had been a mistake this summer, but spent some time going through it, comparing with the notes scribbled in the back of my notebook and realised that it was sadly quite right :frown:

Never a truer word.

Re the different sort of poll with amber as well as red and green: D'oh  I wish i'd remembered that existed. Ah well, too last to get people to fill it out again, I'll just have to go on numbers.
Ukebert, you techie for plays right? I don't know how you do it! I've been brought in late in the day to sort the sound out for a friends play and spent 18 out of the last 48 hours at the theatre; how on earth do you get your work done around it!?

No, that's thefish_uk, and that's literally his entire life outside of engineering.

Yeah do  And one lecture would be fine, if you could maybe schedule a supervision on a Friday as well. And you could take them to the CMS, that would fill up a little while. You don't want to tire them out... Last year if my shadow hadn't been snowed in she would have been at two Russian conversation classes, a Russian supervision and a Spanish lecture, which was probably a bit crazy considering she didn't want to do Russian :p:

Well we need mathmos, you're a mathmo and that's the end of that.
I have double the number of volunteers that I need :s-smilie: I have one Mathmo but he can only do the third weekend and I don't think Emma have any rooms then :frown:

I think this counts as a challenge.
