Do you get bulletin emails/newsletters from your JCR?

Yes, on a weekly basis.
(Although our's is called the JPC - Junior Parlour Committee.)

SoapyDish
If so, do you read them?

Yes - at the very least I'll read the intro and the titles, and maybe the content if some of the titles look interesting.

SoapyDish
If you don't read them, what would make you read them?

N / A.

SoapyDish
How would you prefer to receive news from your JCR?

By email.

SoapyDish
I'm running for publicity officer this year...one of the responsibilities is sending out the newsletter emails, but it's a well-known fact/problem that no-one reads them.

Good luck.

Yeh. The alternatives are too ghastly to consider. Although I wouldn't be surprised if a crew from Peterhouse turned up wearing fan tshirts :shifty:

oOo... Wittgenstein :teeth:

Yeah, confusing propositions are all that is the case .

Good luck with the research proposal; I began mine, got frustrated, and ended up shelving it for consideration over Christmas.

For Cambridge? But you have other options and offers, don't you? Cambridge is my first choice, so I'm really anxious to get it in ASAP, specifically to optimise chances of getting into Tit Hall.

Oh and thanks! I've alternated the order of words in a sentence for about an hour now, and I think its time to give up and have a go tomorrow.

Yes this one is for Cambridge, while I need a so-called "personal statement" for UCL. In-fact, UCL is my primary choice, with Cambridge acting more as a security net. The department likes to send people away for a year, before asking them back. With the possible British Museum collaborative doctoral program, however, it looks like I'll be based on London anyway, at least nominally. Can't say how glad I am for that; Cambridge is fine, but for a while.

It's a difficult document to write, something for which I've really never had any preparation ...

i'm coming to trinity formal next saturday or sunday; you'd better be there.

If you are there on saturday then I will definitely be there. Its Christmas formal as well so should be brilliant. Plans for after it? Soul Tree?

It took me a long time to recognise that there was actually a ball involved...how do the people at the back see?

Which game? Hurling? The ball can be difficult at times to spot, but it normally is easy enough to see. Croke park holds 80k+ and everyone has a good enough view to see. Truely is a fantastic game to watch.

Yeh I assumed as much. Our positions are quite reversed. I'm leaving my two 'security net' options for the Christmas holiday, and putting alot more work and effort into my first choice. What happened to your US plans, by the way? My other options are first Bristol and then Sussex. In all honesty, Bristol is really the only other place I would volunteer to live in. I was just lucky that it had a suitable course!

Yes it is a pain. I found a social science book called 'research design' immensely useful over the summer, just in terms of templates and working out the best way to pitch things. Your library should have loads of these sorts of books lying about. Also I'm willing to show you my research proposal after I've sent it in if you want some sort of idea (although naturally my subject will require totally different skills and approach)

Ok I take it back alex :p: The Resistance is awesome! Took awhile though...

I can't wait for Christmas superhall! I'm feeling in a great mood now that I only have two essays left. This weekend's will definitely be a push given that I'm cutting into the essay time with this proposal crap, but the one afterwards should be nice and lazy.

I'll just have to treat the Christmas holiday as a sort of third Cambridge term :s-smilie:
Blaah
"In Ireland people usually do not call the Irish language Gaelic. Most people refer to it simply as "Irish", or Gaeilge in the language itself. In Irish vernacular, the term "Gaelic" as a noun often refers to Gaelic games"

Wikipedia never lies, we call it Gaelic.

Do you mean you call the Scottish language Gaelic? Cos I sure as hell know that there is no language in Ireland called Gaelic

Where else are you applying? As for the US, it simply isn't viable in terms of cost. I cannot afford either the cash or the hassle of organizing the myriad and complex applications to US universities. Equally, their modular systems and standardized testing just piss me off and seem to be a worryingly bad way of 'educating' people.

Your offer is most welcome, thankyou . What I've written so far seems competent and convincing, realizing that I have a lot more experience than I'd bet on.

I can't really understand what the huge rage about America is anyway, to be honest. Unless people are going purely for prestige, which is relatively unimportant to me. I really didn't enjoy the culture or the place on my visits, so the thought of living there is distinctly off putting.

Lol. When I wrote my proposal I was extremely strict with myself, structuring everything into a very narrow framework focusing on central research questions, design, methodology, literature review and so on. Its only today when I reread the department page that I noticed:
For the MPhil, the proposal need only be 1 - 2 pages, but should give a clear idea of the viability and importance of the research area, some indication of proposed methodology and your ability and interest in doing the work.

This last minute realisation firstly meant that I noticed they don't state that 1-2 pages is the limit, but rather said that you don't 'need' to write more than that if you're applying for MPhil (in comparison to the 3-4 suggested for PhD) So actually I have room to go over if I want. This is a relief as my complete proposal was lacking a literature review at 2 pages.
The second thing is that I suddenly realised they wanted me to talk about my interest and background skills and experiences, which I hadn't thought appropriate. I'm glad its allowed to go in! And that I have space for it.

So yeh... sorry that's a bit waffly. I just meant that so far my feelings about my proposal were mostly: aaak, is my idea and proposed method plausible/fundable/viable, etc. Once I've written a paragraph selling myself I'll probably feel a bit better about it :p:

What? You are only going to book it now? It has been sold out for a week. Same with Sunday, Monday and Tuesday all because they are Christmas formals. You better hope that someone here has a spare ticket for you

I'm confused. You're at Trinity, right? How would Tyro be booking tickets at the same Christmas formal? :lolwut:

Yeah, I was confused as well. I assumed he had someone bringing him to Christmas formal, as we were allowed to buy 1 guest ticket. Looks like he isn't going anymore :p:
