If you googled Bell's Palsy you should have seen that the cause is believed to be the irritation of the facial nerve is caused by a virus. They also say its most likely to be Herpes Simplex(any signs of cold sores?) but like meningitis most viruses probably can have the same effect (last bit is me speculating). It also says the virus can lie dormant in the nerves and then activate, which may explain the delay.
Yeah I saw the bit about the herpes virus...but she doesn't have cold sores (although I know they can lie dormant) and she's not...*ahem*...active.
She's been to the doctors, they've confirmed it's Bell's Palsy, and prescribed her a load of medication. Apparently it could go in a few weeks, or it could be permanent...If so, she could need cosmetic surgery. She's so upset And she didn't sleep at all last night because she couldn't close her eye...one of her other friends is out buying surgical tape and cotton wool pads so she can keep her eye shut at night, or she could get corneal damage from it drying out. How unlucky can you get?! Swine flu and facial paralysis in the same week...

Well as I speculated (any other medics which to add to my speculation) maybe another virus could have a similar effect e.g. swine flu virus? like multiple viruses can be responsible for meningitis.
Its very unlucky, though from what I read there, there is more chance of her recovering fine than not so it should be ok.
I never find napping during the day refreshing. I always wake up more tired than before. What am I doing wrong?
I read something that said you should try to nap long enough to fit whole cycles of REM sleep in - so multiples of 2 hours or so - or you would be tired when you woke up.
Grr, why does our JCR always insist on advertising Clare Comedy only a few hours before the actual event is going to happen? If I knew about it long beforehand I'd be able to structure my work around going. Mehbleh. (I know scarlet ibis mentioned it earlier this week, but I've only just started catching up with the last week or so of CamChat.)
I've found it hard to concentrate on work this week. The current essay topic - westward expansion of the US - isn't stimulating me as I thought it would. There are interesting things about it, but I picked the wrong question. It'll be OK, though. In any case, I'd be happy to write an exam essay on any of the six past essay topics I've done so far this term, so I can afford to coast on this one.

Quick reminder to everyone that the Downing Open Mic night is tomorrow at 9! If you want, we could all meet at the Plodge at the Regent Street entrance @ quarter to?
I'll come to Downing Open Mic! I'm going to a talk at 8.30pm, though, so I'll probably arrive at 10pm-10.30pm. I might do the Pembroke one too.
Since you two are the only physicists I know of on here: how/who to/when can I go about trying to get some sort of physics project/placement in the cavendish over next summer?

Sorry, this is a bit of a rambling reply. Maybe i'll tidy it up at some point...
I got 9 books out from the reading list for my Postmodernism essay, and the second one by Harvey was so damn good that I decided to screw the rest of them and just kept reading it. For 10hours So now I have to write this essay for tomorrow. While the one book is more than enough to answer the essay question pretty damn well, I'm trying to find quick ways of pretending that I read the other books too
First step: Stanford on Postmodernism. Second step: Introductions for The Cultural Turn and The Postmodern Turn.
I think I might then pull my first all nighter of term. This wouldn't be necessary if I wasn't having to have lunch with my grandmother at 12 before my 2pm Education lecture, because she lives near Addenbrookes and I agreed I'd use the opportunity to visit some or other Monday while I was so close. Tomorrow's going to massively suck. Still - first all nighter happening in Week 7 is somewhat of a record for me!
