So it's basically... like a Mac? :p:

BOOM!

I can just picture Steve Jobs doing one of those annoying new Windows 7 adverts, claiming it was his idea.

Even with the student discount? Mine was only about £750-£800ish

Only!? :headfire: *coughs and splutters*

Given that I haven't had any bad experiences with laptops.... my last one remained fast and stable for over two years, and I didn't have any issues with Vista... I can't see any reason to buy a piece of equipment literally twice the price! The specs of my old laptop were a dual core processor (I think one of the ones everyone recommends not getting), 120GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. That served me beautifully. Right now you can replace a system with those specs (if you even find somewhere that still does specs that low ) for £2-300.

The laptop the insurance want to give me has better specs than those I was aiming at a week or two back when I was browsing for options should they pay me in money. And that laptop is still about £450 on most of the sites I've seen it on. The insurance company doubtless get it cheaper.

That's good news. Thanks guys. Its the interface I care most about. The tab change sounds a bit annoying, but if its only one thing then adjusting shouldn't be too disorientating.

Don't worry - its like changing from Office 2003 to Office 2007 - annoying at first, but once you get used to it you'll wonder how you ever lived without it :yep:

Oh wow! My last laptop had those specs and cost £600 and was a piece of junk. I think I've detailed the problems before... my mum had the same laptop and has had identical issues with it, so we probably had a faulty batch. It was a Toshiba Satellite incidentally :s-smilie: So paying £150 more didn't seem like a lot to me because it was such a step up in functionality. Although it wasn't technically paying £150 more, it was picking up litter for an extra night and a half, and even that was worth it!

Yeh, you said. Well when it looked like I might be given money by insurance to dispense with as I wanted, I was working out whether I ought to invest in a mac or not. But seeing as the company are offering me a replacement rather than paying me, I don't really have a choice. A mac isn't on the cards. If I was paying, I'd probably still opt for a laptop because it seems that most people don't have problems. Its unfortunate that they're offering me the same product you had, although mine is obviously a much newer model, so hopefully it will be ok. Ironically another TSRer said they would really recommend Toshiba having had several of them and family members with them and never having issues :dontknow: And it was the same with every other make I looked at. I hear good and bad reports for Dell, HP, Acer etc.

Yeah, that's fair enough  Like I said, I think we just had a bad batch - we bought the same model at the same time and experienced it breaking down in exactly the same way at exactly the same time. Its price had been cut significantly before we bought it, probably should have wondered why  It's not the same as the one I had, mine was a much older Satellite - got it two years ago now. I wasn't trying to criticise your laptop choice or anything! I just love my Mac

So, I have a puncture. I'm vaguely aware that the first step in sorting this out is to remove the wheel from the bike, but the brakes seem to be in the way...

You need to release the brake; depending on which wheel it is there should be a small locking mechanism which you can pull apart.

In the following link, you see where it says "front brakes" and "rear brakes"? Those sections are where you can 'unclip' the braking cable.
It could be lupus

Thoughtful of you. I always play the dual-national card when it comes to sport, seeing as I couldn't give a rat's arse who wins anything ever. So yeh, for the purposes of whatever sport/game/match you're on about, I'm English

You're going to watch Ireland play rugby on just an 8-pack? Brave choice.

Sounds like its a done deal whatever I might want. I take no interest, but I'm not so ignorant as to be unaware of SA's rugby prowess :p:
Bar extension costume for tonight - trying to create the concept of text speak/instant messaging. Easier said than done.

In other news, I love my Access volunteers - I ask them all to come to CRB checks and they all turn up

Thanks, managed to work it out. Forgot to clip the brake back together when putting it back on though, was lucky I only discovered it when I wanted to slow down a bit, not needed to majorly stop...
