Thanks for the Pratchetts Craggy Should be able to finish two of them at least.
My Balalaika came today It's not great, but I like it. Remains to be seen how it plays obviously. It is missing two of the little white things that the strings loop on to and also the strings. Other than that seems to be in reasonable condition. Catsmeat, what gauge strings should I buy? Scale length of approx 46cm, nut to bridge. It has two labels inside, one saying
ММП PCФCP
And then some other stuff that I can't be bothered to transcribe.
How annoying. I wanted to know what the first year genetics (NatSci) and biological anthropology papers were like, to see if I'd be able to supervise them. Grr.
I have access to past bio anth papers if that's any help? I can PM you last years questions if you like?
If you could, that would be great. I'm interested in any that are related to genetics, since that's what I'd like to supervise (although the whole course looks really interesting... wish I'd looked at it when I was thinking about universities!)

If you PM me your email, I'll be able to send you a word doc of essay titles for Evolution & Behaviour and Biology of Cells (first year natsci) for the past 5 years or so.

Hmm, well gague depends on how you're tuning it. Balalaika style or Russian guitar (balalaika would be EEA). This depends on whether you have a three or six string balalaika. But generically you need high gague, and you could go for (this is a six-string tuned to EEEEAA).
EE .73 EE .73 AA .60
You can tune and gague it like a uke, but not a mandolin (you'll stress the AA string too far).

As for those labels, these might just be capitalizations: they say "MMP and PC(f)PC", I think .
Oh, if you're using a three-string then go for E(nylon)E(nylon)A(steel).
If I can find some batteries for my camera then I shall take a picture of the label.
So E of .73 Nylon and A of .60 steel? I'll pop down to Ken Stevens tomorrow and see whether I can root some out of their chest of drawers. Along with the little white things.
ukdragon, myself, my supervision partner and my supervisor all failed to do so. I think it's just a hideous mess of a question.
Good to know thanks. Won't spend too much time on it then.
Is CBA an officially recognised mathematical acronym? Kind of like QED only that instead of having proven something you're communicating that you've reached a point beyond which no-one can seriously expect you to go?

I tend to use "and the result follows" which usually translates to "I hope the result follows, but this is due in an hour and I cba to check it..."

I believe this notation is more standard:
I've reached that stage tonight with partial differential equations.
Can't remember exactly, but I think if you assume the middle two vertical resistors are of the same value then the algebra is a bit better (although still bad). Don't know whether your supervisor will think this is cheating though.
