Well it was probably sensible of the publisher to sell some with a cover appealing to the more conservative reader  People might be put off or get the wrong idea about the books from the crazy Kirby covers. But the plain black cover is boring Its just solid black and then an image or icon on the front. Like a wizard's hat or something basic. The same sort of thing you see on so many other book covers. There's nothing Discworld about it, whereas Kirby art is inherently Discwordly :frown:

Yeah, I notice a similar thing with the Harry Potter books too.
Meh, I've never really cared about covers, and so having lots of stuff on one occasionally annoys me as I can't tell what it is at a glance.

While I would never go for the cover art on its own, all of the Pratchetts I first read had it, so it now has positive sentimental associations, and I also think it really fits the feel of the books (busy, satirical and OTT)

If you mean covers like this:
then I didn't know they came in any other and I agree that they match the books well.

I love it when things have aesthetically pleasing or original, characteristic covers. It definitely adds to my experience. But then I generally notice visual details.

Yeah, these are Paul Kirby's, before he sadly died (this is why the newer books have different styles). The black-and-gold covers are, I agree with Craggy, most likely aimed at a more conservative reader, or one new to the arguably self-referencial covers of Kirby (which are dripping with fantasy cliches, and also include his self-portrait in at least one case).

:yep: What's the name of the new guy who took over? Josh Kidby? He does a pretty good job of doing something along the same lines...

The snow is fantastic! Old Court has a light dusting now.
It's pretty horrible outside now. The wind must be going at least a squillion miles an hour and it's cold.

Yeah, I guess I live up to my stereotype reasonably well sometimes:p:

Indeed, I can see cars in the traffic jam outsides beyond covered in snow.

I know. I had to make the trek between college and the Grad Pad
I also just opened my window and a huge gust came in dusting me in snowflakes :awesome: Love it! Going to be so hard to make myself work tomorrow. I'll be tempted to kit myself up in gore tex and woolen stuff and go crazy :nutcase:

So you didn't miss the snow after all...

Heh, I really hate the cartoony Harry Potter covers as well. My copy of the very first book (bought all those years ago) is just a b+w pic of a steam train (I guess meant to be the hogwarts express) and I infinitely prefer it to the horrible cartoon ones that followed.

I'm pretty sure I had that one too  But I can't really remember finding it all that different to the ones which followed :s-smilie:

I think, oddly, for HP I prefer the silly cartoony ones!
The black ones just seem a little grown up for my liking:cool:

Black Harry Potters? :lolwut:
It could be lupus
Thanks. I bought flash cards to help me learn everything. I can remember things like the cranial nerves, but when it comes to naming parts of the bones or which nerve and artery supplies a muscle then thats when I come into bother.

I swear there are some covers which are just black, with a square on the front cover with an image inside it, no?

Oh right. I might have seen them, but I can't remember. Imo way too much fantasy relies on this basic matte black with something small and minimalist on it.
Looking back at my bookcase I see black Trudi Canavan, black Neil Gaiman, black Phillip Pullman and a black edition of LOTR...

Nope  It even snowed in Coventry. But only a tiny bit, and it happened while I was in a windowless room. So that didn't really count.

some of my peers used this last year. I had a look myself but
a)I hate colouring in at the best of times
b)the pictures weren't very instructive
c)I stopped doing colouring books when i was 3 :p:
