Do you really not get it, or are you just saying what makes more sense from a logical standpoint?

A bit of both. With all the people the Doctor has let die over the series (pl.), I didn't see any good reason why this one was so different.

I know it probably won't happen because it's primarily a children's show, and it's being pointed in the direction of teenage girls and True Blood/Twilight/other trash, but I'd like to see more development of the Doctor's family and history on Gallifrey, though RTD has pretty much scuppered any hope of that with his shortsighted idea to destroy the planet and ban the Doctor from returning

I'm not sure - to me it seemed pretty strongly hinted that that old woman was the Doctor's mother.

Were those two kneeling those who voted against? Who would the other person be? (Doctor's father?)

I have a feeling it may also be because the guest star on Blink is so, uh, visually appealing.

Hmm, you do have a point

I wouldn't... I think some of the Doctor's appeal is still the mystery about his past, and whilst I can see they've been trying to make him more human with David Tennant I think he has to remain a little bit distanced. In a way I think they spoilt this a bit by having the Time Lords actually feature. The more they reveal about his past / Gallifrey, the less he can do to surprise us! Also one of the good things about DW is you can watch it without having to remember much backstory - the Doctor develops as a character over time and changes with each regeneration, but there isn't any lengthy history to remember.

Yeah, but he never lets them die so he doesn't need to, he does it because it's written in history or saving them would mean murdering someone else.

I guess, but she's back in the time lock, if not dead, right?

Fish - given that he has a grand-daughter etc I think family is one thing that could be developed. Over the 10 incarnations of the Dr we've seen lots of Gallifrey - quite a lot has been revealed, but not to the current generation of viewers, who I think are missing out as a result

I know what you mean. I also don't get why the Doctor didn't just let Wilfred die - what's so special about him that he's worth a regeneration? Still good fun to watch though.

can't imagine what you're talking about :ninja: :p:

i think theres more to come from wilf, his name is an anagram of time lord ftw I admit that ain't very good but it could be taken somewhere... :dontknow:
I'm doing my first piece of holiday work by editing my long essay. This is supposed to be the easiest piece of vac work I have, yet I procrastinated from doing it all day and am now editing at a snail's pace. :frown:

This post could've been written by me.

And me.

And for the record, I thought that the second part of DW failed to deliver compared to the first. It was just ludicrous by the end. I especially liked the fact that a diamond was brought down to earth by chucking it at an image of earth that had not been explained. I thought the whole point of the time lock was that things couldn't get out? And the recap at the end was sickening. And the bit with Donna was unsatisfying.

Hmm, but would it all be consistent? I don't really know that much about DW (i.e. I've watched the new series and read a bit about other stuff on Wikipedia) and it tends to feel a bit like they're making it up as they go along, that there isn't an overall story arc that links the old and the new series, and that they're quite happy to invent things / change the rules when it's convenient for a story - an awful lot of the time you do feel a bit cheated by the stuff they come up with.

My birthday party is going to be on the 13th (Wednesday the day after start of term) so keep the evening free if you're interested. I'll send out invites soon. Annoyingly the facebook events setup doesn't allow you to import a group or anything :hmpf:

true but davros escaped in the previous series, its all a bit messy but i'm prepared to suspend belief a bit, I quite liked the montage (why can i not say that word anymore without thinking of the montage song in team america)- the martha-mickey bit was cute :o:

In other news i'm begining to get sick of snow, spent another hour or so this morning digging the 2" of snow that fell over night off the street. I'll be glad to get back to cam on tuesday for a snow free time (though judging by the forecast i'm not sure that'll last)

I'm not a proper Whovite but I think this statement is key

Ditto. How could it NOT be blink?!

I just want Dr Who to be back on tv already..See what the new doctor is like.. I think Matt Smith may be decent [based on all of 20 seconds].
42"..! I think I know whose room to invade whenever it is back on..

Have you seen the preview of series five on here? You can't tell much from it, but it's making me all the more excited.

It's also clear from the clip that a lot of the Moffatt staples will be returning - the angels from "Blink", plus River Song from "Silence in the Library" (although you could tell from that episode that her character was always going to come back).

munro90
argh! thats an awesome episode too! As are The Sound of the Drums/Last of the Time Lords, Doomsday (Daleks vs. Cybermen = :awesome:), Satan's Pit and Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. :eek3: soo many awesome episodes my head may just explode at the thought of them :p:

Don't forget "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood" :yep:

I'm in a situation of not quite knowing what work to do. I'm putting the final finishing touches on my Themes & Sources, which is due in on January 15. The amount of work I have left to do on the project won't fill eleven days, so I'm thinking of using that time to revise/consolidate other parts of the Tripos, but at the same time I feel I ought to be working on T&S as the deadline is so close.

:poke: Dr Ukebert, next term I shall give you my ukulele so that you can perform surgery on it. The poor thing keeps going massively out of tune; I think the pegs need some kind of adjustment. Expect rep - and, above all, gratefulness - in return :p:
Just been rewatching the last dr who- i'm now much more dissatisfied than i was at first. the last half hour was an utter waste of time after you realise how much of the earlier bit doesn't make sense at all ("the moment", how they break the time lock, who that women is, why wilf(!?), why the time lords even want to return, why you have to be quiet in the vacumn of space for RADAR not to find you (!)) grr the storyline is soooo 2d. I'm now deeply dissappointed with it, stupid RTD!
that preview you posted CPF is awesome though (so much so it has been introduced into my sig)

Yeah, the last episode was sentimental clap trap. I didn't get a whole lot of the levels [mostly the ones you've pointed out] and would have liked some kind of backstory as to WTH was going on. Like who was angry bloke [apart form an angry timelord], and why was he so angry? Why did he vapourise objecting women, and then why not the other two who voted 'no'?
Uuuurgh.
However, I was left majorly excited for the new doctor/series.. and want to watch it NOW! Especially since:

Am I right in thinking the vaporising glove was the same as the gloves in Torchwood used to bring people back from the dead?

I got the feeling that it was the same, yes.

I've sent out invitations for my birthday now. There are loads of you so I might have accidentally missed some people out. Particularly freshers whose RL names I'm not reliably familiar with yet :o: If I have forgotten you, please find the facebook event which is on my profile page and click the option requesting an invitation :flutter:
