I agree with this. One of my friends flights back to Liverpool was cancelled today. Last thing I want is for my flight to be cancelled on Saturday. I am really looking forward to going back

Yeah, I think the situation must be even worse for people who are flying - I hear that flights to/from Gatwick and Luton have been suspended completely :s-smilie: And apparently it's going to be heavy snow this weekend as well....

:pinch: I wish it would stop snowing right now - it makes things so much more difficult driving back up to Cambridge with all of my stuff (indeed, I was supposed to go on Thursday but that's looking a bit unlikely now). It can snow all it wants once I'm back...

The 3-day forecast leading up to the day I'm arriving at Heathrow is snow. :s-smilie: How bad is it? Hopefully there won't be transport disruptions like last time...

Heathrow (and Stansted) seem to be more resilient to snow than Gatwick or Luton so you stand a higher chance of your flight not being cancelled. However it is pretty bad but you should be ok if you are arriving nearer to the middle of the day.

Is there any way to get involved in access/widening admissions? (Other than the obvious 'run for access officer'.) I'm hardly a great example myself, but it's something I'm really interested in, so I'd happily talk at schools or anything.

My College (Emma) used to pay students who helped out with access £50 a day + free lunch if you helped out with access events in College. I don't think you get quite as much as that anymore, but it's still good. We used to run events along with New Hall and Fitz, but I believe we are only associated with one of those Colleges now. http://www.emma.cam.ac.uk/admissions/schools/

There may be an accesss mailing list in College which you can sign up to which will allow you to receive emails from your Student Liason Officer with details of how you can help.
Got up a bit before 7 this morning which is the earliest I've been up for 2.5 weeks, doesn't feel nice. I'm usually quite good at early starts as well! Off to hospital...

Unfortunately I'm arriving very early in the morning. Hmmm.

A bit. But you're not the first CompSci to hate physics.

It normally helps if you're around college outside of term.

That way, you can for example end up giving a talk to 400 or so potential applicants at an open day, whilst sitting next to the Senior Tutor, and say how on some weeks I did about two hour's work...

Still, it was obviously persuasive, because Lidka heard the speech and replied. Not sure if the two are connected, though...

And then I did the same thing two years on (minus the two hours bit, though I'm sure some weeks I've done less!)... and there are applicants who recognise me from it. Felt slightly hereditary!

I can't remember anything else you said, that was obviously the memorable bit :p:

Hrrm. I am becoming concerned about this snow stuff. Domestic flights are always the first ones to get cancelled. And if I do manage to get to Stansted, trains can still run in snow right? I mean, I know they can't when there are leaves on the line...

And, aw, all the applicants! I've seen a couple of magdaz ones in the results thread already, shame I will never meet them *melodramatic sniff* I'm so old..
Snow in Cambridge! Pretty!

mwiko: the trains still ran when it snowed before Christmas, although they were a bit delayed. If you have mobile internet, you can keep a track of live departures from stansted.
I just took a train to Ely, got off, and took a train back to Cambridge...

I'm surprised how quickly the snow has settled. It started as I left the station, and by the time I'd walked back to my room there was a pretty good covering
:woo: w00p! snow! I hope plenty settles (one day away from the several inches we had at home and I'm no longer sick of it but instead want it back) by plenty i mean at least two inches, i want to build an igloo (yes i have regressed into an 8 year old)

Are you doing the facilitation for the PfPB review sessions next week?

Have you ever built an igloo before? Its :awesome:

Seriously though, less of the snow. I really want to get back on saturday, and with no delays. I am meant to be buying formal tickets for tuesday as part of a surprise birthday party
ack, national rail enquiries website seems to be having issues, can anyone else get to it? I am worried that if they start cancelling, we won't be able to get home!

EDIT: they're running a 'lighter' version of the website because their servers are swamped! cant think why

Yup. Monday afternoon. IIRC, werlop is doing Monday morning.
Is it just me or has TSR got quite a high rate of success for people getting into Cambridge? Compared to the actual rate of people getting in? This is based on the offers thread and on the applicants thread

TSR has got an abnormally high rate of success, yes. It is a self-selective sample - people on here tend to be those who care about their education; it is, after all, called The Student Room. This is further skewed in favour by a much greater proportion of those who are successful posting that they have offers than those who were unsuccessful that they don't, quite a few of which disappear around now.

Yeah I guessed the last point. I suppose it is true that they are also the people who care about their education and where they go.

However I think you are right in saying that it is an abnormally high rate. I doubt there are many people who would apply to Cambridge who didn't care about their education. Unless they applied solely for the reputation

I did when i was younger but i was never very sucessful as there isn't really enough snow in a garden to do it. but now i've got the entirety of fellows garden and it seems to snow more the past few winters so i think i finally stand a chance of completing one

sweet, i'm in the 1.30-3pm session on monday so hopefully will see you there.
Just drove to tesco in the snow. Why do people have to drive like idiots?? Was going bang on 30, and someone speeds up behind and overtakes, taking up all my breakng distance. He got so close to the car infront that it wouldn't even have been appropriate if it wasn't snowing!
