Although I remember you mentioning something about needing to buy lots of your own food, and they have 2 fridges between about 12 people...I know it's just a little thing but it's worth checking

This is a good point. Cooking facilities in college are really pretty limited. I've got 3 hobs and one fridge. (Although the kitchen next door has a microwave.) The fridge is shared by about 6 people, so it's not unusual to have to rearrange for it to be more efficiently packed. I have been able to self-cater without substantial problems, though. :dontknow:

I once rigged my old 150-watt amp (a spider-II HD head and cab, with sickeningly decent lower-end) to a CD rig and laptop. It was a bit of a jury-rig, at best, but sounded, you can imagine, like a choir of angels .

That sounds awesome:biggrin:

Mine is a little less cool; I have an Onkyo TX-SR507 with a Samsung upscaling DVD player (forget the model number), and a 34" LG 1080p TV. My speakers are a pretty lame 5.1 Yamaha set. The sub has to be turned up for it to sound anything but tinny. The amp has a 'pure-audio' setting which outputs to the fronts and processes the sound with limited circuitry, which I really ruins any music I play. I just want pure stereo sound with no sub...hence this purchase. I got a nice pair of Mordaunt Short 914s off a forum for less than 1/5 of their original retail price. They're apparently lightly used and 3 years old.

I can't wait to plug them in, so I guess I'll stop typi

And obviously I think John's is amazing

I've just been looking some more and I think St John's might be the one for me. I like the look of the whole college. I wish one of the tutors would just tell me where there's places and stick me there.

I might end up having to leave the I'd rather be at Oxford than St John's Facebook group though...

At Homerton we had 1 kitchen between 8 with one hob and one fridge. The fridge was fine for storing my fresh food the only problem was I went down it so quickly and couldn't get to the shops to fill it up :s-smilie: Saying that I did steal the whole top shelf.

We had a microwave which was a novelty as I don't have one at home but I do enjoy cooking on the hob. I supppose you can always find a microwave if there isn't one. It's weird that nowhere has ovens. I know Homerton did for second years in certain accommodation but I can't find any for first years.

Everyone in the Kenny A, Kenny B and Howard Court rooms in Downing get ovens I think. I don't think there are any in the staircases, but that must at least a fair majority of first years with access to an oven. We're pretty central too!

EDIT: Okay, the Downing website seems happy to accept Education applicants, but on the uni website, Downing is listed as not accepting applicants for Education. :/

Oh, and welcome back!

If I can't apply to Downing I could do with finding someone there who has an oven I can use

It's confusing with education as some accept it, some accept it with certain subjects and some don't seem sure what they do...

They won't know. Numbers aren't confirmed until August when exam results come out and they see how many people have made their offers and what they're going to decide for those who've missed.

In John's Cripps, at least one gyp room in every staircase has an oven (I think), albeit a tiny one that's not very reliable, and the same goes for microwaves. A few people have brought their own microwaves too. Our floor got the oven in our staircase, which I think might have slightly sexist reasons behind it...we're the only four girls in a 24-person staircase!

Welcome back! :hello: Nice to see you've made plans

I live in Howard Court, so you could use my floor's oven (whenever it is not being used to reheat some dodgy leftovers); it's a good oven though (well, for the few times I've used it). I'm only in it for this year though (maybe make some friends with people in the applicants / offer holder's chat thread).

Did you go see Westenra in the end?

Another suggestion would be something like a halogen oven (essentially a glass bowl with a whacking great bulb in the top) - but the problem here is that they might be considered a fire hazard. For example, they're explicitly forbidden in our accommodation.

No I didn't I left before that. I was definite that I wouldn't return but I've realised that at any university I would have had a bad time feeling the way I was so that's why I'm trying to get something sorted now. I hope she does the same concert next year!

I know there's some mini ovens which are microwaves too which might be an idea. I love baking so was hoping to continue with that. I suppose there'll always be someone I know with some sort of kitchwn facilities.

I make all my food (well I occasionally get ready meals, but I make the vast majority of stuff anyway excluding cereal and chocolatey stuff) and my corridor only has one fridge between 12 people. It gets a bit full, but I've always been able to put food in. I agree that it should be considered though: it would be easier to share the kitchen with fewer people, and someone who eats a wider variety than me may need more space.

Note for e hine e as Christ's is one of the places you're considering: I'm sure you could get a room with a kitchen shared between three if you requested it, there are loads of those. It just limits your choice. (For the first year they only ask what price range you're looking for, but if you went to them and gave your reason for wanting better cooking facilities I don't see why they wouldn't allow some flexibility.) I'm not aware of anywhere having an oven unfortunately.

Michaelyus - I'm sorry that our reheating of "some dodgy leftovers" offends you so. The state of the kitchen would be a lot worse if we all spent lots of time making rings out of sugar. :p:
On the bright side if we keep getting weather like this we won't be needing fridges. Where I live there's been snow on the ground for 3 weeks now and at the moment it's about a foot deep.

I've emailed the relevant person and explained that Christ's is my number one choice but I'm not sure as they have limited places for education so I've also listed my other options. I hate having to make decisions.
