hey!!! how are you? and yay for Friday!

Traumatized :P Friday should be funtimes - are you coming shopping in the morning?

Yeah, I haven't had a problem with the sailing trips that I've been on, getting the examples papers done on time. I wouldn't want to do it more than once a term, which is another reason why I haven't been on a CUHWC trip yet, I've been too preoccupied with CUY.

I can't get away for mountain biking either, Michelmas being the only feasible time but most courses in the UK, despite being all-season, aren't all that fun in the cold, especially if you're planning to be out for an entire day. I'm bottling up my need for elevations by road cycling the Fens instead. I miss Coed-y Brenin already.
Hello

Does anyone have any recommendations for a coffee shop I can perch myself in for the next couple of weeks whilst I get some reading done that isn't likely to be full of noisy tourists (and does good coffee)?

I have three weeks to occupy and the Central Library doesn't open until the 29th

Note that if you want a library, there are other, smaller public libraries if you're prepared to go out of the centre of Cambridge:
http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/directory/cambridge_central_library.htm

Also, Borders book shop is a good place to read - it has comfy chairs dotted about in it. And a coffee shop in the top floor. It's at 12-13 Market St (CB2 3PA)

Here's a truly wierd suggestion - the Zoology museum. If memory serves me correctly there are tables downstairs and entrance is free to the public. http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/museum/. It would be quiet because it's a museum.

Churches are quiet and sometimes open but lighting is often poor...

The Central Library is reopening??? At last?? It closed right after I got a library card.

Costa in WHSmith was pretty empty the only time I went into it, not been in there in summer though. Places with an upstairs like Caffe Nero next to Borders might also be less packed....

Ever since the central library closed there's been a mobile library van cycling round the middle of town. Enjoy reading on the road?

Thanks - the Zoology museum is an inspired suggestion that would be perfect.

I'll also check out Borders... I think I may burn up if I were to enter church grounds

The rumour is that it'll reopen at the end of the month (http://hipweb.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/central/) though the reality may be very different!
Will also try Nero & Costa thanks

Nah... might spill my coffee

Ooooh I like the Starbucks in Borders - sitting by the window there is good for people watching =) Not that I do peoplewatch... much.

I'd also potentially be up for a hike, although I really do need to invest in a new pair of boots

Likewise (to both parts). :p:

How bizarre, I dreamt about public libraries last night...

I'm pretty sure that, proportional to average population, CamChat has a surprisingly high no. of hiking enthusiasts

Not that surprising. Both forum users and hiking enthusiasts tend to be geeks :sly: We'll resurrect the Hadrian's Wall trip at some time. epitome said she'd also be keen now that she's in a regular job. For me it would have to be during a vac, but perhaps it could be on a bank holiday weekend.

Cafe Nero in Heffers (Trinity street) or the Grad Cafe in the University Centre (bad coffee though)

When are bank holidays ever any different to any other days in Cambridge?

visesh explicitly said he would only be able to make weekends on the previous page. Also if epitome was coming, or FadetoBlackout and scarlet ibis (who have all expressed interest) it would be inclusive to aim for times they could make :p:

Yeah. No point in doing so if that means we can't make it, though.

You could just MTFU and do some extra work during the week. Or have it during the vac and lose some numbers.

Obviously :eyeball:

So I don't understand the relevance of a bank holiday weekend. Either it's a weekend, in which case most people can come, or it spills over into Monday, in which case half of us (with lectures and so on) can't. :p:
