Have you been talking to the big student finance in glasgow, or your local one? I ran into problems because they refused to send me the summary which had the word 'final' on it, so I couldn't apply for a bursary [despite student finance putting money into my account].. Tried ringing the general number given, was eventually passed to my local office, who were much more switched on and fixed the problem by noticing that a box hadn't been ticked on the computer screen. I now have the local office's number and ring it first whenever I have a query...
The one in Glasgow but I might try and find out my local one. They sent my birth certificate back by recorded delivery so they must have got it...
Well this is another bursary (Helena Kennedy). £500 a year which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things but it should be useful. I hope they don't hold onto it as I won't be able to eat a lot in college due to my food requirements so my college bills in that area might not be too big but I will have to buy other food. Or starve.
Is that a college specific bursary?
Being a 'mature student' turned out to be quite useful for me. Our Admissions secretary emailed me a few months before I started to day 'by the way, we're awarding you a mature student's start-up bursary of £500 as soon as you arrive' That and the extra 2k a year or so from Newton Trust

Snap. I had that problem and they took months to sort it out! I kept ringing and they kept looking at their computers and saying, yeh its final now, we'll send it straight away... meanwhile I piled up about 10 'provisional' notification forms

So if I wait 2 years I'll be fine...certainly an option
It's an external bursary. We had to write yet another personal statement to apply for it. There's an awards ceremony at the house of lords for it in october but I'm not sure whether I'll be going...
I had my first dream about TSR last night. It involved the "Who Quoted Me" panel saying that several people had quoted me, only for me to click on them and these posts weren't there. Perhaps the lamest dream ever?
(Which also reminds me: I've been quoted quite a lot in the last few days and I wanted to thank those who have, as I know the business of quoting me is often a bit of a drag )

I haven't heard from my college parents yet. Will it be by post or email or does it depend on the college/individuals?
I haven't heard back from my kids yet, even though I sent my letters to them on Tuesday morning via a postbox outside Russell Square station. I know there's a postal strike in some places, though. I'll email/Facebok them if I haven't heard from them within a week but I don't want to seem like an over-anxious dad!

Still need to pack for my flight tomorrow, and wash all the clothes I weeded out to dump on charity (a large bin bag full)

No it isn't, because you have to be over 21 at the start of your degree in order to be counted a mature student.

Blegh. Just as I'd finished hanging all of my washing up, the washing line broke I then found that there was some spare washing line tied into a knot at the end. I tried to cut off a piece of it to form a link between the broken ends, but it was wire covered in plastic. After experimentation with a swiss army knife and a can opener (don't ask) I gave up and managed to untie one end, lengthen the line slightly, and retie it. Unfortunately the whole thing hangs far lower as I couldn't get it strung so tight, and I have no idea whether it will last the night. Particularly annoying as I really need all the clothes dry to run to charity before departing tomorrow, and I haven't figure out how to use the antiquated, coin-operated tumble dryer

Perhaps it represents hidden feelings of futility and despair?
I knew I should have applied to a rich college. I'm expecting a bursary too which should hopefully still come through by cheque to cover minor expenses. It's stupid, the beginning of term is when I need the money!
Explain your situation in writing to your college Bursar, copying in your tutor, DoS and anyone else who might be on your side. From what I hear few colleges, rich or poor, will get heavy with anyone in genuine and unavoidable financial difficulties and will give them any space and time they need to pay their way. It's the serious chancers they're looking out for.
London is one of the least scary places in the world. Its packaged in unambigious tourist-instructions.
Only if you're going underground. Attempting to cross roads in Central London is plain scary. I have a thing about roads though. People should indicate. And even then you can't trust them. >_>

Roads are still easier than most other parts of the UK for two reasons: 1) Cars obey pedestrian crossings for a change, because London is pedestrianised 2) Crossing roads is less risky because there are usually packs of people trying to cross at a time, so you can tag along with them and experience less risk of being squashed
I realise this only applies to central London. But non-central London is just like anywhere else.
I agree about the indicating thing, but that holds everywhere. When my reflexes are quick enough, I have a rude-looking hand sign for drivers who do that to me. I make flicker motions with my fingers at them, glaring meaningfully (if they're likely to see at all)

Do what saster says!! It's true that Homerton dont have as much money to give out as other colleges, but there is still money around (for example I got a grant to go travelling this summer), and if you are in genuine need you WILL get some. Remember we're only 'poor' by cambridge standards. It's not a problem for them if you pay your college bill late or whatever. They do also definitely have a hardship fund, I've read about it and know people who have used it, you just need to provide bank statements and the info from student finance.
Also, now that we are becoming an actual cambridge college we will have a lot more access to university inter collegiate funds (if that makes you feel any safer, definitely never believe you should have applied to a rich college, we're the best - really!!! )

Happily Cambridge is the bestest for pedestrians
Except for the corner of Trumpington street and Silver street - I really hate that bit!!!

Justified. I usually manage to avoid it because the back of Peterhouse leads out onto Little St Mary's Lane which turns into Mill lane, which in turn has an alley which leads onto Silver street
That and I practically never have to go to the Sidgewick site

I don't think that bit is too bad; it's the crossroads of Trumpington Street and Pembroke Street / Mill Lane which gets me - I was hit by a bike twice last year there - the cyclists were not very happy to say the least...

Should be post, but it probably depends on the individuals. I know that college parents should have been sorted out by now because we don't have a complicated allocations system like Robinson. Don't worry though, I don't think I heard anything until late September, and then I received a typed letter from my father with all the useful information about arriving at college and things, and a week later a handmade card from my wonderful college mummy with the names of my siblings and some words of encouragement. It will depend on the people but they will have been instructed to write to you so you'll hear in due course!
