So basically I've been made an offer on condition that I don't take a gap year - a sacrifice I'm willing to make, to be honest. Pretty shocked, but ofc extremely happy too
First positive result of the year! Congratulations.
I'm in a slight state of disbelief right now (so figured it was as good a time as any to create an account rather than just lurking all the time!)
I applied for 2010 entry PPE at St. John's this year (i.e. deferred entry, taking a gap year), and had my interviews earlier this week just like everyone else. Anyway, about an hour ago I had a phone call from the admissions secretary, asking whether I would consider 2009 entry instead. I queried why, and was informed that they were formally making me an offer!

Congrats, and so early. You must've really impressed so well done to you.
If the tutors would want to have any greater accuray the test would have been taken place several times so you write more essays.
The point is, they don't need any greater accuracy; certainly not to the extent of marking loads more essays. They have a huge over-supply of really good applicants.

However, they only have 1 essay. That would almost be equivalent to just having one multiple-choice question. Not much room for error.
That's right: and you (probably) were rejected because of that. It's quite simple; you didn't do as well as many others: you got dropped. They have plenty more to choose from. The tutors don't owe you any favours.

Can we leave this now, please?

Sounds like you're grumpy.
Anyway, if I was rejected because of the considered that my essay was not so great I believe it was an unfair decision, but it was theirs to make, so **** happends.

You will have been rejected because you didn't have a realistic chance of getting in. From what others have said your grades seem fine so maybe your TSA didn't go well, or your essay wasn't good enough, or maybe you had a poor reference, or even a poor personl statement. All these things are looked at and in their opinion a couple weren't good enough and so you would not have had any chance of getting in even after interview, to invite you would have been a waste of time for the uni and for you. I'm not saying they were right but that's what would've motivated them, just be happy that you will have the opportunity go to another excellent uni.

If my grades are fine, then the only thing that could have been the reason was that my essay on the TSA wasn't good enough.
I'll just have to wait sometime in January to get feedback on my application.

Jesus Christ, how hard is it to read? In all the stuff oxford sends you and on the website they give you a list of things that they consider, and it goes beyond the TSA essay and your grades. So no, your TSA essay wasn't necessarily the only reason.
I just got rejected by Warwick as well. So far, the unis that I shoved on there as filler (after York and Oxford) have all rejected me. Luckily, I've got an offer from York, which, along with Oxford, is one of the two places I actually want to go.
