If you think you can get an A in it the defintely, you'd have as close to a perfect choice of subjects as it's possible to get applying to PPE. But would you be doing it in just the one year? I only ask because it seems like you're already doing a lot of subjects as it is, but if you can manage all of them then good on you.

Hi I am applying for natsci, i take A2 chemistry, maths and biology. To AS I take further maths and physics. But my school is offering me a choice to also take AS philosophy, is it worth doing it? I know its not very well relevant to the rest of my subjects but by taking it and doing well in it, hopefully an A grade, would it be an advantage to me in my application. Or is it pointless and wont help me, but hinder me? Everyone is saying different things at school saying I should do it, some say I shouldnt and that its useless.... What should I do??

I doubt it will really help your application in any way, not the most well regarded A level and I very much doubt would be part of any offer. But do it if you can handle the work load and would enjoy it, if you're just looking to further your application though I would use the time to read around and stuff instead. What would help more would be to take FM or Physics to A2.

okay I guess

Not saying you shouldn't do it though, if you think you'll enjoy it, go for it! It's nice doing something that isn't science once in a while (though I do love science, if I couldn't sit and read a good book a few times a week I'd go mental) and it wont HARM your application unless it means you do worse in your other subjects. But (from what I've heard, don't take what I say as gospel, I'm not even there yet!) I doubt it will HELP your application. There's more to life than just your uni application though .

Will only doing 4 AS's and 3 A-Levels be at the detriment to an applicant?

Not to the extent that it will make it even more difficult to get in than is usual for applying to Oxford PPE, and not to the extent that unduly stretching yourself during your A level year would be. Naturally the better your academic history the better your application, and the more A levels you take the more ability you can demonstrate. But, I think the difference between a candidate with 4 A levels and one with 3 is tiny, certainly other factors in your application will be much more important.

A bit of a problem, Im not really sure what degree I want to do at university! It's between history+politics or PPE. PPE seems amazing, I've never looked into it before. But I don't have maths A-Level. And I slacked at GCSE a lot, and got a GCSE maths grade B. I am taking a gap year and gaining relevant experience, but would this GCSE maths grade B make it look reallllllly bad? :frown: x

What's your understanding of economics like? I imagine the lack of a maths A level would be a problem, especially if you get an interview that involves mathematical problem solving. The B at GCSE doesn't really help either, but assuming you've improved since then, you might be able to overcome that.

What is your objection to History and Politics? It seems to take the Politics element of PPE (including elements of political philosophy) as well as the History course allowing for one to explore various aspects of international relations, history of political thought, and economic history, and might suit better a candidate who isn't quite so mathematically orientated.

I am of course, highly biased

I'm still really confused, I applied for straight history this year but am now taking a gap year, but a few months ago after I'd sent off my aplications I realised that History and Politics would be the IDEAL course for me! But now I've seen PPE (just researched it today) and actually I don't think I'd enjoy PPE and am going to stick to history and politics!

Thank you! +rep

Has anyone got any idea of which extra ciricular activities are respected? Or are they just a small aspect of the application that doesn't need worrying about too much?

Thanks for the rep.

You're right, extra-curricular activities are not an important part of the application but having some intersting ones can not hinder your application as long as you don't spend too long talking about them in your PS.

I did a PPE weekend in Oxford in November, I think it was with debate chambers or something... it was really helpful, I'm going to an Oxford conference in Cardiff with my school later this month.

Anyone else got any PPE related conferences etc, they're attending and/or would like to recommend?

I am from Cyprus,17y and interested in studying PPE ..

I currently have AAA (with low module grades) in physics maths and computing and 95/100 Apolytirion(predicted) but because of the compulsory military service I am not able to apply for any uni until 2011. Until then having AAA won't mean anything because of the introduction of A*. During my military service i'll be able to do 3 more A levels and i think history, economics and chemistry are good enough.. Do you think is possible to get in oxford with this kind of grades? will my current AAA(or a possible AAAAAA) be considered equivalent to the future A*? do you think the subjects I have chosen to do are ok? is it possible for someone from my country to get through the interview?

I don't know what to think.. Oxford is the only reason to apply for ppe but I am not sure if the "Oxford dream" is even possible..

So basically, you're only interested in studying PPE at Oxford and nowhere else...?

As long as get someone to make this situation very clear (re military service etc) in your reference, i can't see why there wouldn't be any point in your applying
