Say i received an AAAC in my AS which i think may be a possibility. Is this really going to affect my chances?
I'm interested in this too, what is the minimum in terms of 4 AS-Levels that you can get away with? Hoping for AABB.

I know someone who got into history with that, but it's pushing it. I would tend to think that if you're hoping for AABB you're probably going to struggle, both at getting in and at the studies if you do get in, if you're expecting better and screw up it's a bit different.

At the moment i am doing Maths, Literature, History and Business Studies. However, i am going to drop English next year for A2 probably. I was wondering if this would really make a major difference? Is there anyone here who goes Oxford and took B.S?

I think they say that you're only allowed one 'soft' subject out of 3. Why not continue all four and drop English if it's too hard, or not specified in your offer?

I think i could only get a B at most if i tried really hard at English Lit.
I don't think they're too bothered as long as you haven't got 'three' soft subjects.

What do you guys think if i took Maths, History and Business Studies at A2? Would Business affect the chances quite highly??

Should be ok.

What jobs could you get from this course?

One of Oxford's most famous degrees - you're not closing any jobs short of ones with major prerequisites such as medicine or vet med.

Do you think that the introduction of the A* will have an impact on those applying during a gap year, considering that they will not have A*s, even though their marks may be the equivalent of A*s. (I realise that Oxford have not moved to raise their application threshold to A*AA)

I assume that the large numbers of gap year students that go to Oxford means they'd be aware of it.
I don't think it would look good, especially as you'd be visibly dropping an "academic" subject for a "less academic" one.

Just sat two out of three maths exams.

Its not looking great.

I'm literally right on the A / B border.

If I miss an A it'll be by only a few marks. Just realising how flawed the grade system actually is, you're miles apart from someone gaining a B but might only get a mark more then them.

If I get a B for AS maths how much would that harm my chances do people think? How much attention do Oxford pay to grades rather then UMS?

Oxford don't see UMS, and failing to get an A at AS maths would be a huge blow.

Hello- I want to do PPE but I'm not sure if I'll be a "serious" candidate given that I take art as level and my extra curricular activities are a bit random (eg- self taught in ukulele, makes films)?
nobody cares about the extra-curriculars, if you have three other a-levels it'll be fine

Thanks, really put that smile back on my face!

Like I said, it seems a pretty stupid system not seeing UMS.

Does your college force you to cash in your AS grades? We didn't have to, which meant Oxford didn't know about my B's in Maths and History (two recommended subjects, whoops).
Ask you college/school about it.

Not really, I don't think UMS marks make a very good discriminator between candidates.

I would be tempted to put York over Warwick for the PPE course - it's been around for longer (better established)

I have no idea about York yet, but I might be able to shed some light on the differences between Warwick and Oxford. At the Warwick university open day the PPE department gave a talk where they said that although Oxford was better in terms of prestige, at Warwick the subjects are more fused so the degree not just a combination of subjects. I have no idea how true this is, but the tutor for the course said that unlike at Oxford or York where the three subjects are studied seperately to form a degree, at Warwick in some of the modules you look at issues and then look at economic, political and philosophical perspectives.

The best example of this would be, I would have thought, Immigration where the economists says yes, the philosophers say probably but the people who vote say no.

This is why I'm now seriously considering whether I'd rather go to Warwick instead of Oxford because the bits of the PPE course I like most are the bits where the subjects combine. However, this being said, it's more likely that I won't ever have a decision to make as the college I'm thinking of applying to for PPE got 123 applications for 14 places last year!
