Oxford don't give a flying monkey about your SAT scores, that's why they say they only offer on APs.

Sort of true, some colleges want it and others don't want it. I personally didn't send mine in and I got an offer. Email and ask.

Cambridge don't really care about personal statements, go to page 4 of this. Just write some generic rubbish for your other applications.

This. I vividly remember in one of my interviews, with the standard personal statement professing my love of Chemistry since I was about 2, the interviewer opening up with.

'Hopefully in your time here you'll do some chemistry so I'll ask you about that'

Classic.
Nika A
I wrote about studying Chemistry on my own from many foreign textbooks since the second year of grammar school, attending the 2008 International Chemistry Olympiad as a competitor and my plans about re-entering the selection process again in 2009, I also mentioned three summer research camps in 2006, 2007 and 2008 that I participated in, where I had the opportunity to work in highly-equipped labs of a Slovenian ecological institute. And I got the offer.

Wow. Although they are really extra-curricular activities.

I think I wrote something about the sports I played.

To be honest, your personal statement and extra-curriculars are not that important.
Reply 4064
I don't think they are unimportant. If you manage to achieve excellent grades whilst doing many other time-consuming activities means you're good at general time management, which is necessary if you want to be successful at Cambridge and still live a quite normal social life.

I have a question about final exams and classes. Approximately what percent of points do you have to achieve in your exams to get a first or 2.1?

Thanks everyone! From what I understand, Maths is pretty important to the tutors due to the Economics portion of PPE and the "Logic" elements of Philosophy. I juust scraped past the minimum of 1400 (1410 ftw!), but I may have to compensate somehow- if I managed to get a "5" (A) in AP Macroeconomics, do you think this would suffice?

No. An 'average' (compared to other applicants that is) score in a school level economics exam has no bearing whatsoever on your mathematical ability.

What exactly did you send in? Just APs?
hi there guys and gals, first post so take it easy  , basically got 12 A*s at GCSE taking Maths, further maths, biology, chemistry and economics, hopefully get A*s in all at A2 and most likely going get all As at AS, was head boy......

So id like to think ive got an average chance of getting into oxford to study PPE (after reading some comments in forums I think despite my GCSEs ive got an AVERAGE chance at best). If im wrong in thinking this please state so and why :frown:

Now as you can see from my A-level choices i will be walking blind in terms of philosophy and politics, so all i wanted was advice on some aspects of philosophical politics/economics and philosophy or a particular aspect of economics that i may find interesting and take the time to write about 5000 words on (project) over the summer. Any thing that u uself might have found of particular interest, all genuine comments will be extremely appreciated, thanks for taking the time to read my post and hope to get some responses soon :yep:

P.S anything else that you would recommend for someone in my position , i.e. new to philosophy and politics, although I feel that philosophy is extremly interesting (almost like a different approach to life/schools of thought after having done science and maths for my entire academic life)

kindest regards Mr T
MR T__THATS RIGHT FOOL!!!

I think you've got a much better than average chance. Although the implied lack of any knowledge of the 'PP' bit perhaps suggests you might like Economics and Management better or even just straight Economics at Cambridge? But, if you're set on PPE, then the best judge of something interesting to write about is yourself - reading Wollf's 'Introduction to Political Philosophy' and finding an aspect you like in that might be a good idea.

ok so just read about the E&M course on the oxford website and i think you are probably right, so if i decided to do the project on something related to E&M what would you recommend  or would i be better reposting this in the E&M thread
I just finished AS... They predicted 4 As, but i'll just wait n see... In the meantime, what colleges are best for PPE? Balliol, Christ Church, Corpus Christi and St. Anne's appeal to me most (cos they wer researched 1st.)

Also, I do History Maths Econ and Geo. No Philosophy, no Politics. So while I KNOW I wanna do PPE, I dont know WHY i want to. So. Anyone who's done PPE, especially at Oxford, Help. PLEASE!!

Also anything useful. Cheers, people.

Balliol is the most famous for it i believe
i think thats where im applying but not for the same course
go to the open day on wednesday/thursday
i believe quite a lot of the colleges are offering tours without booking after a certain time and some eg brasenose are informal for the entire day
it should help you decide

dont really know anything about PPE sorry :frown:
You can't ask people here to tell you why you want to do PPE. You need to find that out for yourself. How will you write your PS otherwise?

Any prepping tips for the admissions test?

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you

Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.

Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own..

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.
