In terms of personal statment, does it matter if you write about reading the pop-economics books, like Freakonomics, The Undercover Economist? (I'm not talking about those specifically...)

Also, I'm reading books on globalisation and China, and other areas...and I'm really not sure which to mention on my PS...I'm interested in all of them: is it fine if I mention around three different topics which I'm interested in, i.e. Globalisation, Politics and Economics in China, Markets...? Or is it too much?

Thank you.

They're hardly going to expect you to have read the textbooks they teach the macro and micro courses from. They're £40 a pop for starters, not to mention boring as christ.
Also, does it matter that I do not have one particular paper that I read everyday? People keep asking me "what's your newspaper?" and "which paper do you read?" It's making me wonder whether I should have some more consistency.

My school has all of the main papers to read everyday, and I just read whichever one I come across...

I'm not a PPEist, but I read the Guardian/Times mostly

I got asked at interview if there had been a recent story that had taken my interest. So it's not like I had to read one paper religiously for months, unless there's a certain columnist you like of course.

I just finished AS... They predicted 4 As, but i'll just wait n see... In the meantime, what colleges are best for PPE? Balliol, Christ Church, Corpus Christi and St. Anne's appeal to me most (cos they wer researched 1st.)

Also, I do History Maths Econ and Geo. No Philosophy, no Politics. So while I KNOW I wanna do PPE, I dont know WHY i want to. So. Anyone who's done PPE, especially at Oxford, Help. PLEASE!!

Also anything useful. Cheers, people.

Well there is little in the way of "best".

The colleges with currently the most PPE students across 3 years is:
Balliol - 41
University - 32
New College - 31
Brasenose - 29
Magdalen - 29

However this doesn't tell the whole story, for instance the colleges with the most Economics and Managment students are Pembroke and Hertford college, both of which have very strong economics departments which will benefit PPE students.

By another "best" metric, in 2007 (the only year I have data for) Merton and Christ Church had probably trhe most PPE students graduate with 1st class degrees.

Thanks for this Andy - yeah I suppose it doesn't matter too much...
I'm interested in exploring the theme of democracy, ethics and globalisation in more detail.

Which books do people suggest for this? I'm looking for books which give good background information but also have interesting analytical approaches to various arguments and ideas.

Thank you very much.

I think it is already well know the principles behind the NatSci course, but i have a small question that i'd like to receive an answer for:
i would like to study psychology, but biochemistry and astrophysics are also appealing to me...so i was wondering if there is a chance for Part II(third year) to choose to study Psychology at degree level (for BA) and then choose Part III(fourth year), which is optional, to study Biochemistry for example, or Astrophysics(for MS), but without having studied them in Part II(third year) ?

Any answer and help are welcomed! Thank you in advance ! All the best !

No. The Part III courses will require things that are taught in Part II. The closest thing you could get to it is doing the 'broad curriculum' options listed on the NatSci pages.

No, there'd be too much to catch up (Astrophysics especially would be impossible since it is soooo much maths and stuff you just wouldn't be able to cope with it)

And they wouldn't let you do biochem either for similar reasons
is that "the topic: 'democracy, ethics and globalization'" or "the topic: 'democracy', 'ethics' and 'globalization'"? if the latter it shouldnt be hard to find introductory stuff; if the former, it's probably unrealistic to find something accessible to an absolute beginner.

Thank you...i thought so, too...but i was still hoping...one can never be judged for one's dreams ...however, out of these 3 - Psychology, Biochem and Astrophys...which one do you think is better? I mean which would be better respected and would have more options for future jobs?

Thank you again ! All the best !

Thanks. But do stereotypes apply? For real? Like, I've heard Balliol people are meant to be quite eccentric... And Christ Church etc. I only was interested in because of the choir and drama. But are they only likely to let you in for all those extracurricular activities if you're "good enough"? Do you even have TIME for all that??

You can't ask people here to tell you why you want to do PPE. You need to find that out for yourself. How will you write your PS otherwise?

See, the thing is, I want to know why other people do. I know, I think, deep inside myself... just takin a lil longer than usual for it to emerge clearly so I can express myself. I get so stuck trynna write my PS... :s-smilie: Like, if I told em i wanna be a teacher and open an orphanage but join the UN/Diplomatic services once I've got a degree in Law (I'm plannin on a 1-year law conversion thingamajig) they'd just look at me, i can almost picture this, and roll their eyes. So. Just wanting ideas tossed around.

Why do I keep losing my subscription to this thread...?!?!

I too keep losing my subscription to this thread.

I also spent the last three minutes looking for the "It is a mystery" smiley. Did this even exist, or am I going crazy?
probably not

The latter. Three seperate topics that I think I'd like to talk about on my PS.

Yeah, I could find lots of intro stuff - just curious as to whether anyone has read any really good books related to this recently.

It is rather irritating as I miss huge chunks of conversation, and sometimes I wonder whether I'm subconsciously unsubscribing...? :s-smilie:

As to the "It is a mystery smiley," I have no idea...
Hi all!
I'm hoping to apply to oxford to study PPE this September/October. I went to the Open Day this week and loved it, but have NO IDEA what college to apply for!!!
I'm looking for somewhere that isn't ridiculously competitive (but still good!). I want somewhere that is friendly, not too pretensious and reasonably spacious.
If you have any ideas that would be fantastic?
Thanks!!!

The other thing is that to do part II Astrophysics you'd have to do the two physics options for IB and realistically the IB Maths aswell. This would leave you with no other IB options.
