Really? There certainly is one, and there has been for years as far as I'm aware. There should be a specimen paper on the website somewhere which is in exactly the same format as my test was last year.

Supposedly they're thinking of making applicants do the PPE test prior to calling people up for interviews..whether it's the same test or not I'm not sure and whether they're actually going to do it this year or not, again I'm not sure...I hope they make up their minds soon :s-smilie:

Hi

Does anybody know if it's possible to make the BA in PPE and then the Master in International relations?

Another question: Is it possible to become a "Dr" in PPE? Or even to become a prof in PPE ?

Strange question, I know  But please try to answer.

A BA in PPE should be sufficient for entry onto an MA course in International Relations.

No, one can only be a doctor in one of the related disciplines and sub-disciplines, though most PHDs are Doctors of Philosophy, DPhils

All PPE lecturers and Professors are in fact lecturers in either Philosophy, Politics or Economics, not PPE.

Or unless they have 3 doctorates in the three disciplines.

I think they're starting the pre-interview PPE test from next year or so.
But it's not the same test and I'm pretty sure you still have to do the other test along with you're interview. The pre-interview test is apparently something like the LNAT.

The Oxford admissions website has been updated with some info:

http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/courses/ppec.shtml

Is there a written test?

All candidates will take a written test, either at their own school or at an examination centre, on 31 October 2007. There will no longer be a test during the interview period as there has been in previous years. Full details about the new test - including a specimen paper, and information about how to register for the test - will be available soon.

So the test starts this year, and there's still just one written test to sit for.

Keep your eyes peeled for the details.

Interesting! My eyes are well and truly peeled. I imagine it will be similar to the previous tests though, and that they've just brought it forward to get the marks in earlier?

Oh and by the way, I admit I haven't read through the whole thread so apologies if I am repeating a question, but can anyone recommend some good economics books to read? I don't do economics for AS, but am taking it on next year. I feel I've already read around philosophy and politics reasonably well, and am wary of neglecting the economics.
Are you reading it for enjoyment? If so read something semi-economic like "the armchair economist" or "freakonomics".
I think Freakonomics is more benificial for Critial Thinking than for Economics because of all the reasoning flaws in it!

Honestly, I've not read either...

I'm glad to see that the written test has been pulled forward. One wonders if this means that in the future, every PPE applicant will sit the paper, and then only the best candidates who demonstrate themselves on paper get through to interview. That to me seems a vast improvement on the system as was last year.

I thought that "The Undercover Economist" was better than "Freakonomics" as a pop-economy book. "The Worldly Philosophers" is also a good one for getting the history of economic thought.
Can anybody recommend a good economics book? Nothing too weighty but nothing too easy because I've pretty much grasped basic economics concepts from doing AS.

Look at the above posts! How about Free Lunch?
Well tomorrow it all ends .... last exam!
What are you planning to do after then?
Rest a lot I assume

Haha ! I like "the armchair ecoomist", though it is completely unrelated to anything I have done in the first year course.

Well done!! Phew, I get nervous just *thinking* about finals. It's really weird that I'm more freaked out by something that won't happen for two years than by Prelims that are happening in two weeks.
Good luck for them
I may apply for PPE later this year, providing I get 4 A's at AS. Any ideas what I should read over the summer? does it matter? (I already study philosophy, so should be fine without any introductory texts for that).
