sorry if i am hijacking this thread ino its specifically oxford but no one would answer this anywhere else and i always get a good reply on here:

my choices so far are....

oxford AAA
Warwick AAAb
York AAB
Manchester AAB

i am predicted A*A*A (i think thats a bit ambitious but its what my teachers said)

but i would like a ABB course just incase i do not get offers from the others....

i would say ppe at Essex, east anglia, hull etc but to be honest im not that keen on the unis

so i have been drawn to Politics and economics joint honours whihc is offered at ABB at manchester but would i be at a disadvantage applying for 2 courses at manc? would they doubt my commitment to the course?

Also i am somewhat limited to where i can apply for P&E because i havent done A/AS level maths but i did get A* at gcse so im not that awful!

so basically asking if anyone knows somewhere that offers a good ppe or pe course with requirments of ABB not including maths!

thank you

Well Edinburgh will give a BBB offer, BUT you need good GCSEs- I had a disgrunted friend who was rejected for Politics (and international Relations) who had 3As predicted, and her feedback said that they expected a greater number of A*s at GCSE. Also, it's nice to get such a comparatively low offer, but there isn't any garentee that they will give you one- a lot of very able applicants seem to get rejected. It might be worth putting in there though for Pol and Econ (i did) if the reason you want one is to have a really low insurance, rather than be certain of getting an offer from somewhere. Oh also, you'll have to do a 4 year degree and get an MA at the end of it. I didn't find this out until i got my offer!

On the plus side, it's an incredibly well respected Uni which gives out offers massively lower than it's academic equals. And Scotland= cheaper fees.

There was a woman at my school who was lovely and tried to convince me to go to swansea- and they give you like £3000 for getting really good results, and i think their offer was ABB, (that was PPE) I didn't apply but i don't know if that might interest you.

urgh mine is awful aswell, i just hate writing it! its so depressing! oh well it has to be done :frown:

Oh gawsh. Well, as you say, it's got to be done. How'd you manage to fit philosophy in there?? I'm scared since I'll be applying for Pol n Econ at LSE and they really hate you if they think Ox will take you...
You nearly done, then??

I got offers from both with a PPE focused PS (i mean if you read my PS it's pretty obvious i want to do PPE - espec the last line) so it does happen! I think it's only some of LSE's admissions who loathe Oxbridge applicants.

I'm no expert on the subject to put it mildly, but i am a PPEist (or will be in a months time!) and will happily give your PS a read for you in that capacity if you'd like.

And ''I'm just showing it to as many people as I can find who would agree to read it. :P''- i admire this, i was pathetically embarressable about mine as a result i repeated a simple phrase in the space of around 200 words, so it's no doubt better to have your attitude!

5 minutes and it'll be in your inbox! UUUUURRRGGHHH!!!! *pulls agonised face*
Well. I AM embarassed. Good thing about TSR is that no one really "knows" me.
By the way, would you happen to think Balliol's a bit ambitious? That's my first choice, but I thought St.Hilda's could be ok, if it'll increase my chances of getting in by even a little bit?? I reckoned that if I'm daring to apply somewhere as competitive as Ox, I may as well go for it. Then again, I'd rather get into Ox than not be offered a place.

What dyou think?? :s-smilie:

My personal opinion is that you should apply to ChCh because its superb, and i am a self appointed Christ Church publicist - as soon as anyone says the words 'i'm thinking of applying to Oxford..' they get 'which college? Because you know it really should be ChCh'. (and you know, over 20% of British PMs were educated there..!)

But seriously the Oxford pool system is really quite strong (unlike the Cambridge one) so apply where you want to go. If you apply to Balliol, it might be harder to get in there than say, St Hughs, but if you're good enough for Oxford they will make sure you get sent to another college - so go where you really want to

ChCh sounded great until people kept tellin me n I kept reading bout most people being the BRILLIANT ones. Like yourself. Also most of them go to independent "posh" schools and I really, REALLY wouldn't fit in... Sorry, my PS is a little late, I thought I'd improve it a little before I send it over...

Well while i'm certianly no working class hero, I did go to a very normal comprehensive - which i loved (just under 60% A-Cs at GCSEs), and my parents are just middle class professionals (high school teacher and a something-in-an-office-inspecting-taxes), so i wouldn't worry about everyone being posh. Having said this, it really doesn't bother me at all- i have friends who applied to different colleges because they felt much the same as you, so it is important go with where you're going to be happy. Also, I am teased (fairly accurately) that i am just a public school boy at heart anyway, so i guess it wouldn't bother me in the same way it might others!

Go for where you'll be comfortable, but really i assure you, not everyone who gets a ChCh offer is posh or brilliant!!

At least that clears it up, :P My mother never went to uni, my dad did an undergrad in Agricultural Sciences (Biochem), but is now unemployed. Also HUGE issue being I'll have to apply as an International Student, even though I'm British. (I lived abroad for 5 years, is why)
Do you know/remember where I can get the admissions stats for each subject in each college? Also the gender/race/class breakdown? I saw it somewhere but for the life of me cannot remember...
Hi could anyone who has successfully applied for PPE please pm me their personal statement? (massssive cheek I know!) Thanks in advance!

Hmm yeah Edinburgh rejected me for politics and economics which I was a bit surprised about when everywhere else had given me offers :\ I guess the BBB offer is a bit misleading - they are just more decisive about who they want so if they give you an offer it means they definitely want you to come.

Just out of interest, just how "PPE-focused" was your PS? I'm applying to PPE and Philosophy & Politics and Int'l Relations & Politics programs, and I explicitly state that I'm interested in "the study of philosophy, politics, and economics." Is this too obvious?
This is a pretty good question  When I first came to Oxford for an open day, I just wanted to see Exeter because I had previously decided that I would be applying there. So I was on Turl Street (where Lincoln, Exeter and Jesus are located) and I went into a building that I assumed belonged to Exeter; I was quite happy to find that the quad, the library and the lawn (and many other things) were beautiful - good choice! Then I looked at the brochure I was given and it said "Lincoln College". So I chose Lincoln in the end, and I'm starting there this October.

(my answer is: Lincoln - it seems so so friendly, it's less intimidating than Exeter, it has really nice food and it's not pretentious at all)

Well i specifically say about wanting to do a degree in "philosophy, politics, and economics.". Do you want me to PM my statement to you? I think you'll be OK for Philos and Pol degrees, but you might find it more difficult to get excepted for Int'l Relations & Politics. I did get rejected from UCL for ESPS (3 year) because of my PS not being relevant to the course.

I was like Rosa.

I wrote a specific PPE-focused statement. Got an offer from Sheffield for Pol&Phil but got rejected by LSE for Pol&Phil. I think it depends on the institution. LSE, my experience tells me, are more strict than others.
Lincoln seems to have a pretty good reputation for PPE
the thing about Lincoln is (some like it some dont) that its an anonymous college - there isnt anything especially that its known for - good or bad. Ask a fair number of undergrads and theyll not be able to tell you where on turl street it is, and more people than you might think make the old exeter/lincoln mix up.

I do like lincoln, its got a really close feel. Exeter is quite the party college (at least in turl street) imo
