I was going to apply to Balliol but am changing my mind, most likely to Brasenose. I've visited both and loved them equally, not to mention Balliol has a formidable academic reputation for PPE, but there was just something about BNC that made me feel at home.

But I'm always changing my mind so I'll probably have switched back to Balliol by the time I've clicked on "post this message"

I was considering Brasenose, it actually had everything I wanted, but I just couldn't stand the thought of being called a Brasenostril. Childish, yes, but somehow it just put me off entirely. Did BNC have anything you thought Balliol didn't have? Even facility-wise, etc? I'm mostly applying to Balliol cos it seems a very community-based college, what with the JCR etc always full and being used alot and things. Might as well have the best of both worlds: Big and established Uni, with a small and friendly network.

Hi, sending my application off next week, I'm applying to Balliol, I liek it's reputation for PPE, sort of know a few people who've been there, and I loved the whole college when I stopped there for the open day. Good luck to everyone getting an interview!
i am applying to study PPE at oxford but cannot choose between New college and Christ Church!! which would you say is easier to get in to? (ie which has less applicants?) also, which are the best pooling colleges?? thank you so much for any help!!

There's very little between New and ChCh in terms of reputation and numbers of applicants. How about heads is ChCh, tails is New?

There's really no need to make the same post three times. Just have a little patience and you'll get replies.

For what it's worth, I agree with BJack: there's probably little between them in terms of popularity, so you may as well just toss a coin. Christ Church might be marginally more popular because it's a bit more widely known, but I doubt it'll make a significant difference. No idea about which colleges pool most people for PPE, though; pooling statistics aren't publicly available. My personal guess would be Balliol, simply because it appears to be incredibly popular with prospective PPEists for some obscure reason, so they'll probably get more good applicants than they have places available and are therefore likely to pool quite a lot.
would you say new and christ church are on par in terms of reputation?! Also, how would you compare Univ with those two?

Definitely apply to Christ Church; New is rubbish.....

In terms of actually awnsering the question, at open day the New tutor said they usually expect a lot more applicants per place than other colleges, roughly 7-9 per place, as they have a good reputation. They then take 34 to interview for 10 places before trying to pool others, although I have no idea how successfully they do so.

If were you I'd just apply to the one you like best, as according to all official sources I've encountered the only non-negligible factor affecting your chances of getting in is how good you are likely to be at the course.

Hope to see you at interview  (if you apply to New)
i was at the open day as well!
how did you decide on new?
7-9 a place is a lot! do you know about the ratio at christ church? i was essentially also considering univ and magdalen but decided not to risk it with magdalen (potentially too competitive)- do you know how competitive Univ is?

Stop trying to play the numbers game. Apply to the college you like best.

Well, to awnser why I applied to new, I'll just say that because I'm lucky eough to go to private school but am not at all "rah", I wanted a college where this wasn't an issue ether way, without too few or too many private school people, so that took it down about half. Then I wanted somewhere old and good but not too good academically - leaving about 10 places before I just had a look round to choose, and as there was a really cool person doing tours at new I picked there.

At the end of the day I really doubt where you apply affects your chances as the admissions process is not vague, it is mathematical. You get a score for the tsa, interview and for prior academic standards etc, so it is a very scientific process, making it very easy for tutors to pick the best candidates. Therefore it is very easy to transfer people across colleges even for very small differences.

So even though I don't know how competitive each college is, only New because someone asked this quetion, I can fairly confidently say that I don't think it matters.

I hope this helps

Current natscis: I'm having a pretty tough time deciding between E&B and geology as a fourth option. Both seem to have received rave reviews on here. I guess I have more of a visceral attraction to E&B but geology seems like it might be the more useful course (resource exploration for instance). Is geology really THAT good?

I did Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Cells (and Maths B) last year. I often wished I'd done E&B instead of Cells- I didn't because of a teacher who had done it about 10 years ago and said he'd found it boring, but what my friends did seemed really interesting.

I never found Geology that interesting from looking at friends' notes etc- but a lot of people do it, love it, and end up doing double geology in 2nd year.

Both are subjects have a lot of people really really like and get passionate about, and sometimes completely turn around their previous ambitions on what they wanted to study.

I did E&B, and although I got quite frustrated with it sometimes (there's a bit of handwaving going on, especially for the psychology part where there isn't really a definitive answer), in the end I even liked the handwavey-ness and although I'm not continuing with anything related this year, I'm really glad I did it - just for general enjoyment and knowledge. I think it was the easiest subject that I did (it was my highest mark); compared to things like Cells or Physiology, there's a lot less facts to learn and more emphasis placed on how you go about structuring the facts to make an argument. There's a lot of essays involved though, probably more compared to geology; for me that was a plus as I like essays, but if you're not a fan of essays then maybe geology would be more suited to you?

It also depends on your other subjects, and whether you're more of a physical or a bio natsci. I hear geology has more basis on maths and physics.

Thanks for the response (AlexG too). My other subjects are pretty heavy physical stuff (maths b, phys, compsci) so while the geology might tie in better with the style of those subjects in a sense I think I'd appreciate E&B as some sort of perverse form of light relief. I don't have a problem with essays, in fact they may also be a nice contrast from solving differential equations all day.
Hey everyone, I have a dilemma about which college to apply to.

Balliol seems like the perfect college for me but it's really competitive for PPE and I'm afraid that they will reject me and the pooling system won't get me into another college.

Teddy Hall (St Edmund Hall) seems really nice and is my second choice, and it's much less competitive than Balliol, but I feel I won't be as passionate at a Teddy Hall interview as I would be at a Balliol one.

Just to give you context, I'm reapplying to Oxford with a 45 in the IB and a pretty solid (I think) personal statement. I'm hoping to do much better on the TSA than last year, so considering all this, should I take my chances and shoot for Balliol?

Any help/opinion/random input will be much appreciated

Go for Balliol. Even if they can't offer you a place, if you're good enough for Oxford, you should get in somewhere. Unless you think you'd be really unhappy at any college other than Balliol or Teddy Hall, that is, in which case you should maybe apply there because it's more likely that you'll get in there than Balliol. HOWEVER, pretty well everyone ends up loving whichever college they're at, regardless of whether they applied there or not, so I'd say on balance go for Balliol

But seriously, go for the one you like best. That's what the pooling system is there for

I'm not entirely sure why I chose BNC over Balliol to be honest, in fact when I visited I'd say Balliol seemed to have the better facilities and for PPE, the reputation. I just felt more "at home" with BNC and something really just clicked there for me. Might seem a bit bizarre to base my college decision on something as transient as emotions etc. but usually gut instincts don't betray.

And good luck with your application, hope it goes all as you want it to  I'm still waiting for my tutor to finish my reference, feels like its' taking forever. I just want it sent off and be done with! :woo: :eek3:

Hopefully, we'll all meet each other soon :h:
Im planning on doing maths, physics and chemistry, along with computer science. But what does computer science actually consist of?
