indeed
Hi everyone.

I'm interested in applying to PPE at Ox. Now, I know it's such a cliche thing to do but I'd appreciate if you guys could give me some input on my chances.

I'd apply as a mature student as I'd already got a first degree (BSc in Software Engineering) and I'm now currently doing a masters (MSs, also in SE). Besides the uni work, I did a lot of related PPE things, I've worked (and still work) for a few NGOs (all international covering topics on youth & democracy development and education, EU and UN- professionally oriented), I've even been in charge of some (on a national level), I've worked for the Foreign Ministry, did an internship at the UNDP office and I currently lead a UN's business network. I have a lot of public speaking experience, international conferences etc. I didn't take A-levels because we don't have them in my country, but I do have all As in the high school exams/courses.

I'm sure a PPE course is what I want to do and I'm really keen on Oxford.

Now my main concern are my grades, my GPA (undergrad) is 4.24 on a 5.0 scale and the grad one will probably be even lower, though I'd apply before I finish it (but hopefully start the 2nd BA after I finish the master).

Could anyone give me comments on my situation? Does it even pay off to apply... I wouldnt want to waste my time and get my hopes up.

Thx!
It seems likely that you would be able to submit a competitive application. You know best, but it sounds like you fancy your chances in a PPE interview too. However, your first concern is asking yourself why you want a BA in PPE. Oxford will want to know too. Why not a masters? Why not another subject? And why Oxford in particular? I'm not saying you shouldn't apply - obviously. Simply, they're things you need to be absolutely clear about, especially since you're a mature student, from the very beginning.
I can't comment on your GPA scores since I'm not familiar with the system. Tutors, however, would probably care more about your aptitude in PPE than in Software Engineering. Still, if it's a very low mark, you need to be able to demonstrate commitment to your studies.

I hope some of that helps in one way or another.
Hi wjcsibelius, thx for the quick answer
I have very clear reasons why I want a BA, a second undergrad that is, mainly because I feel the more general scope of the courses offered and the combination of them in general would perfectly complement my previous experience and will best help me achieve my career goals. A masters would be too specific in its scope and choice of subjects. PPE is also something I feel strongly about studying. Also, it was something I couldn't study back at my home university, at least in that format.
What are your career goals?
Okay, I want to reapply and I'd like to see what my chances are, since I know PPE is really competitive and only 70% of people get to interview to begin with, let alone enter the course.

I have an offer for English but I don't want it anymore.

When I apply I'll be on a gap year working, probably in pretty low wage jobs but I'm going to volunteer for the Lib Dems in my local area, and see if I can get some experience working with my MP (who hopefully won't lose the seat to the uncommitted Conservative candidate, but I digress). Will this work against me? How does Oxford treat reapplicants generally?

My GCSEs and A-levels (hopefully) will be pretty good:
A-levels: AAA in Mathematics, Eng Lit and Politics
AS: C in French, self-study Economics/something in my gap year with the hope of getting a B minimum
GCSE: 2 A*, 6 A, 2 B

I don't have a lot of relevant extra curriculars except my occasional canvassing for the Lib Dems. I do engage myself alot with current political events, I'm keeping up with Newsnight and the debates and the polls. I read alot of theory in my spare time, currently going through Goodwin's Using Political Ideas cover to cover haha. Philosophy and Politics are tied together, and I know quite a bit by osmosis from the course. Probably going to look into reading some hardcore feminist texts and some introductory Economics texts over the summer and beyond.

What do you reckon my chances are? Of course I'll need to do the TSA too but I reckon I can get a good score on it. *blag*

Responses from previous PPE Oxford applicants would be immensely useful and appreciated

Is your English offer from Oxford? If so, have you asked about the possibility of transferring to PPE? I know people are occasionally able to switch before starting, but I suppose English to PPE is quite a big change. :s-smilie: I can't really help you with your subject-specific enquiries, but I can answer this question:

In my experience, no differently than first-time applicants: that I had previously applied (for a different subject) was not brought up at all.

Nah, it's from Exeter. Thanks for that though, that's a reassurance.
I have an offer for PPE. Your chances are about 15% to put it bluntly. I think it's more like 50%, or even less, which get interviewed.

What you need is a lot of luck. But things you can do is to do a lot of reading, learn about your subject.

Are you at a state school? Sorry to ask, but it may make your grades look better if that makes sense. Having just 1A* at GCSE isn't too good my oxford's standards, but if your school doesn't normally get v good results, or you had extenuating circumstances you may be ok.

Yes, you really need a good TSA.

Best of luck!

Yeah I went to a state school, where ~50% of people get 5A*-Cs. At the minute I'm going to an FE college. I do have some extenuating cicumstances, had pre-diabetes through yr10 and got diagnosed during yr11 so I was a little messed up lol. I'm hoping I'll be lucky, but Oxford isn't the be all and end all, I'd just like a shot :P

In that case then you should have a very good chance. I expect your GCSEs wont be an issue at all, you will be on a level footing to everyone else. Do you think you may be able to get some A*s in your A2s? If so, that would look really good.

Have you done some reading? I can suggest a few books if you're a bit stuck.

Best of luck. Where else are you thinking of applying?

Thank you. I'm very limited on my economics knowledge, and I've ordered The Undercover Economist off of Amazon to have a look. After that, can you think of anything else that'd be nice as an introduction?

I don't know if I can manage an A*, it'd be nice huh? :P

It really depends, I'm having some time to think. I'll have to go check them out properly, but right now I'm thinking: Bristol; Manchester; Warwick; Durham; Oxford; LSE. I'll have to check some more out.

Have a look at David Smith's Free Lunch, quite a good introduction, but also fascinating. Freakonomics is really enjoyable and a bit more light than those heavy in theory. Keynes and After was the book that really inspired me to study Economics, although it's a bit more advanced so you probably would want to read some other stuff first.

I'd say apply for a couple of v competitive, risky ones, and keep the others less so. As your GCSEs, although you have reasons, whilst good, aren't as good as some people's, so as you prob don't want to have to take another gap year, i wouldn't take too many risks. The LSE is a very dodgy one. I got rejected :frown: But maybe they jsut didn't like me!

Can I help with anything else?
in all honesty i think you should take your english place, ppe is incredibly competitive, and is kind of a lottery.

Take me for example, i achieved 8A* 3A 1B at GCSE got AAAAB at AS predicted A*A*A in my a levels, i am head boy etc and go to a state school and i was rejected from Oxford, Warwick, York and LSE for ppe/economics and politics.

reapplying is always risky, especially if it is for a competitive course, sorry if i sound negative, my experiences this year have made me very pessimistic (have a look at my sig)

Okay, thank you alot. I've noticed too with English it's a lottery, good people get rejected on sheer demand (UCL for example). You were incredibly unlucky, though! LSE is just a pipedream for me I think, lol. Have you got your personal statement to hand, so I can take a peek? There are several on TSR but most of them don't have an outcome, and I'd love to have a look at yours.

LSE is probably a silly idea considering my GCSEs, probably won't do it lol. Thanks alot for the book recommendations. Could I possibly take a look at your personal statement? I'd like to see what sort of thing I'll be up against :3
hi, so i'm a year 12 student currently doing Maths, Business studies, History, Accounting and English, all at AS, except for Maths, which I'm doing the A level in. I also plan to do the Further Maths A level next year, hence I'm getting the Maths A level out of the way this year. I got 8 A*s at IGCSE, and i know business and accounting aren't too 'traditional' subjects, but these are the only ones offered by my school save for the science subjects which i wasn't interested in. I'm hoping to apply to Oxford for either History and Economics or PPE, more so the former because it focuses on History rather than Politics, which is the area I'm stronger in.
I'm also active in my student council and have held several leadership positions throughout high school. I also have been appointed as the highest level of leadership for my MUN club for next year, which shows my passion for history/politics. I've taken part in several mathematics competitions and have done well. Basically, I'm a pretty good student within my school and region, but probably not the ideal Oxford candidate, with the perfect subject choices and stuff. I just want to know what my chances are, if I do well on the HAT/TSA. I mean, I've done a fair bit of research and it seems like my subjects would probably be the biggest obstacle between me and Ox, assuming everything else goes well.
So please bombard this thread with your thoughts/opinions

p.s. i'm predicted all A's at AS by my school, and hoping for an A, if not an A* in the Maths A level
...about the same as everyone else.
