I have decided on
Maths
History
Economics
English
Further maths AS potentially

would the further maths help me out a lot?

I did Maths, Further Maths, History and Economics and I'm currently in my first year doing PPE. To be honest, how much it helps depends how much you like maths. Certainly for the first year course Further Maths material barely features (and you might then drop economics anyway). But if you like maths then you're more likely to end up continuing with economics, when doing further maths would definitely be helpful.

Given that you are able do it (and your other choices are excellent by the way) I'd say you should. It's not going to do any harm at all. Also, do as much stats as you can.

I think further maths is useful for admissions insofar as it signals you are good at maths. But in terms of content, not much beyond AS-level maths figures in First Year Econ tbh. But if you end up taking econ past first year and doing technical papers, then Further Maths will definitely help content wise.

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to ask: I read on the Philosophy Department's website that the module in Jurisprudence was being piloted as a third year PPE module. Since it is still listed in the PPE website as an option, does this mean it's being retained?

Critical Thinking. Yay or Nay?

I had an A-Level options assembly today, and was told about how the school offers critical thinking as a fifth AS subject. I always thought that this would be a very silly option to take, but the teacher presenting made a few points which I was rather interested in.

1) It only takes up 4 periods in the 80 period two-week time-table (other subjects take up 14)
2) It compliments subjects which require thinking outside of the box (I'm doing Philosophy)
3) It helps you with TSA's for Oxbridge

Now I have always wanted to do PPE at Oxford, and would do anything I can really to obtain that dream. Will Critical Thinking really be of any use to me, if only to help me in my TSA? I know that it won't count in my potential offer, and I know that it is a regarded as a non-subject. But yeh, will this help me at all?

It's in this years handbook as an option, if that helps at all. When they say pilot, it usually means they'll keep it unless it becomes a complete disaster, but might make some changes to the exact workings of it.

I did some independant study of critical thinking as preparation for the TSA and found it quite helpful. However, that was less hours than taking the whole subject would cost you. It wouldn't in any way be a deciding factor for the tutors, but it isn't frowned upon either to have it in addition to normal subjects and some logic tutors might like it. It might also be somewhat useful to learn that way of thinking for your interviews, but I'm not really sure it'll make a massive difference. A more important thing to think about is whether you'll enjoy it.
i am thinking about ppe as i love economics, politics and like most parts of some philosophy. My school requires us to be quite specific about a-levels and university. I was wondering whether these subjects would be an acceptable combination: Maths, History, Latin, Ancient Greek

I could do one other if necessary at AS level. Any comments would be really helpful.

A Levels for PPE...

I was just wondering what´s your opinion on the quality of teaching at university of York (PPE, of course). Is it even slightly comparable to PPE at Oxford ? And what would say about the course in comparison to the course at warwick or durham?

Given very few, if any, students have been taught PPE at both institutions, it will be very difficult for you to get a satisfactory answer.

Sounds good. Maths and History are the only ones they recommend (last time I checked anyway). Feel slightly disadvantaged not having done Politics or Philosophy right now (stuck on a 3000-word essay), but those subjects are perfectly fine for admissions.

What is the best A level combination?

What is the best A level combination?

My friend has just been accepted to do PPE at Oxford but we do the IB, his higher level subjects are Economics, English and Philosophy and his Standard level ones are Maths (methods), Spanish and EcoSystems. I do know though that he had to do maths a-level along side the IB and it seems that Economics is also a necessity. Safest option Maths, philosophy and Economics A-level but you could probably replace philosophy for another 'academic' subject.

A-levels which you enjoy...
That's the point of A-levels. Not 'ooh I want to do PPE/Law/History, which A-levels should I take?!?!'. There's no best combination. Just think which ones might be complimentary. It's not hard - there is no rigid, perfect combination.

Economics,Maths,History are essentials...Other than that you could keep a science subject such as Physics or Biology.

If you wanna impress them further you could have a fifth A-level such as Politics or English Literature.
Maths, History, Economics and Anything else (language, science)

Maths and History are recommended I believe.

Philosophy and Economics wouldn't go amiss surely.
critical thinking isn't a bad thing to have to prepare you for the tsa too

Some economics tutors have said in the past that they prefer students not to have studied economics before, so that they can teach them from the ground up, other than any reading you've already done. Maths, history + one or two others that you enjoy is the perfect combination, but if you don't like maths or history then don't do them. However, if you don't like maths, you might want to consider whether you can put up with a year of very mathematical economics.
