god....that is just too ridiculous, a spelling mistake right in the first sentence......:''(
Well, there are two answers to this.

They see your first sentence, think 'Man, she can't even spell right'. They aren't terribly impressed and reject you right off.

OR

You're being irrational. A spelling mistake is hardly going to affect your application and it is doubtful that the admissions tutors will judge you on that one tiny flaw in your personal statement.

So chill and let go of it now. There's nothing that can be done, so just wait for that interview call to come.

I think I'll call ucas on monday...

or should I email Oxford?
Reply 644
OK, seriously. I sent off my entire UCAS application to completely the wrong college, and they didn't seem to particularly mind that (then again, they are probably quite used to working with common-sense free people). They probably won't even notice that you've made a spelling mistake, and if they do it's not going to be the end of the world.

:'(

My dad says, it would be hilarious to email Oxford because of that spelling mistake.....I am not so sure on that. I mean it is right in the first sentence....that is really annoying. They might think: Oh god, what's that. She claims to be enthusiastic but has no idea how to spell that word...

Don't. Emailing them about a trivial typo would be completely over the top - it's not like you accidentally left out three whole paragraphs or something like that. Even if you did email them, what exactly would you expect them to do about it? Have a secretary insert the extra S or add a post-it note to your application that reads "NB: candidate does know how to spell 'enthusiasm'"?
Just move on and try to forget about it.

To be honest I think you're over-reacting. Oxford care far more about how you think than how you spell. I doubt they'll even notice. Just stay cool and concentrate on the rest of your application.
What are eveyone's thoughts about sending in coursework? I have no essays which are good enough so I plan to send in my history coursework which we have just begun writing. Bad idea?

I am doing the same, I think that's perfectly okay.

If you have it written, marked and sent by November 10th I don't see why it should be a problem.
hey! thanks everyone, specially London_Prophet for for all the valuable advice and opinions. this thread gave me a deep insight into the course of PPE helping me make my decision.
I'm going for Economics at Cambridge and just have my fingers crossed!
Good luck to PPE's current and prospective students...

Am applying for PPE at Magdalen with Economics, Maths, English Literature and Latin A-levels and was wondering to what extent the content of the Economics A-level curriculum comes into an interview, as well as whether or not any Maths is covered by interviewers

Economics A-level shouldn't come into it at all. Plenty of people go into interviews without it, and even if they do touch on things you've learned, it'll just mean you get pushed that bit further until they find things you haven't learned and see how you cope with them.

And there is normally a little Maths involved with the Economics, but nothing major. I had some logic in Philosophy too, which I guess is a little mathsy. Again, Maths A-level shouldn't come into it.

Hey everyone

I clearly remember that somewhere was written "predictable" essays would not be acceptable.

I have no idea what they might mean with "predictable" ? I am just wondering...

Ah- another thing:

On the first page of this wonderful thread here T. Holder recommends to read 'Logic' by W. Hodges. I really would like to read it, the description of that book sounds interesting, but unfortunately, I can't find any library here (also no university library) that offers this book. Shipping would take too much time. Do you know any other interesting (introductory) books on logic you would recommend?

Thanks a lot

Hodges is the first year book on logic. You could try 'Logic' by Newton-Smith. He used to teach first year Logic at Oxford.

Hi guys,

I quickly went through the specimen paper section 1 and I scored 41 out of 50. What is supposed to be a reasonable score?
Yeah I think I got 30 something when I did it :\
