Hey everyone! My PPE (re-)app has just been sent off two days ago  I have a really silly question to those of you who have gone through the whole process of getting accepted...Do you think that expressing your personal beliefs in your PS is not a good thing to do? Like, I wrote about how I'm a member of the Conservative Party, but also don't shrink from reading Marx and the such, and that he wasn't some crazy tyrant, but simply a misinterpreted and mistaken, on certain points, thinker, who was actually one of the very few who bothered to notice the flaws of capitalism. Someone on tsr wrote that they'll reject me straight away because they're all upper-class and now I'm really worried that I wrote something stupid and will get trampled by this...Is that actually true? I'm really panicking now...

The last point, about being rejected 'because they're all upper class' and so on is nonsense, ignore whoever said that. The course tutors are looking for ability to think about topics, research and come to informed conclusions and ability to argue points in a sustained manner and to read and understand the subjects.

Without reading your PS, it's difficult to know how good or bad it was, but the point you outline on Marx sounds like it might be an interesting line of argument and your own personal political views don't make any difference.
Do any current students know how important the essay is for selection to interview? Does it affect your chances of being called to interview, as much as say the TSA Section 1 score and academic qualifications?

I'm not sure if they read all essays from all students(that would take ages). It may be the case that you get an exceptional score and they ask you to come for an interview or maybe if your score is borderline, they take a look at the essay. Once again, I think this depends very much on the tutors.

P.S. I'm not an Oxford student:smile:)

PPE at Warwick and York
Economics and Politics at Edinburgh
Government and Economics at LSE
:s-smilie:
Ionut, where are you from mate?
GCSE's:8A*'s, 2A's (State School) C in FSMQ

A Levels: Maths, History, Economics, Geography

This all in order for a PPE application for Oxford?

Any suggestions about PPE?

Really passionate about Law/Geography along with Politics, with degree would you suggest?

Thanks in advance
It doesn't matter whether you're from a state school, it just matters how intelligent you are

Do you like politics or do you just watch BBC News?
I really enjoy Politics.

Ran for UK Youth Parliament.
Is there any A-Level subject which I should defiantly drop at the end of AS?

Seems to be a strong application.

Do you like the three subjects that PPE offers? Is it just Oxford PPE that attracts you, or would going to another uni, say Warwick or Durham make things a little different? Would you prefer to study a single subject? Which subject do you prefer most and could you see yourself thriving in?

By the way, the Oxford deadline has already passed.

Romania:smile: I'm studying at a state school and taking the Romanian school leaving exams and also an additional A level in Maths at a center in my town. Hope it won't be a disadvantage, as all others are doing either A Levels or IB...

Land Econ at Cambridge
Hey guys

Im struggling with timing with the TSA.

For instance, just now I did the 2010 paper and ran out of time causing me to miss out around 9 questions and score 38/50. Id put an answer down for every question but if I felt I was spending too much time on a question Id have to leave it.

Did anybody else have time issues and what do you suggest?

Also, would 66.5 be a reasonable score or is 70 really what you need?

Many thanks,
Charlie
Any current LMH PPE students out there? If so, what TSA score did you get? I've been averaging around high-60s/low-70s. However, I did the 2011 paper and did awful. Ended up getting 32/50. Really worried now!

Hi,
I'm interested in taking PPE at Oxford and was wondering if the Economics aspect of it would give me the same skills as I would get from taking an Economics degree at Oxford on it's own.

Also, on a side note, does anyone know what kind of jobs you can get with PPE at Oxford and what kind of salaries you'd be looking at (I know money isn't everything but it sorta is)

Thanks

Oxford only offers Economics & Management at undergraduate level, so you've got 50% Economics; whilst for PPE you have 33% Economics (but you can specialise later to make it 50%).

Oxford PPE is pretty much as good as you can get. Many graduates go into finance, politics, etc... and it's an extremely employable degree.
The above is true but bear in mind that usually PPEists only focus on 2 subjects after their first year at Oxford. All of the 'core' economics modules taken by E&M and PPE students are the same.

Actually in first year PPEists and E&Mists sit exactly the same amount of economics - we have tutorials together and sit the same paper for prelims at the end of the year. PPEists do Introductory Economics, Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Politics, while E&Mists do Introductory Economics, General Management and Financial Management.

After first year the economics makeup of a PPE degree depends a lot on the student, a PPEist could do 6 economics modules and only two philosophy or politics modules for finals and in doing so end up doing more economics than an E&Mist.
