But for other subjects, like History, A-level studies are more relevant to degree level, whereas for PPE they stress that none of the subjects are necessary. So perhaps the essays would give more of an insight into the candidate's suitability for the subject in History etc?

Also in history you don't have a written test, only written work, whereas with ppe, you have a test. maube they saw that they were too many differences between the written work and the test? like the people who performed best were not those whose written work was best?

The HAT?
For some reason I can't really see them phasing out written work altogether. I think there are probably a lot more difficulties associated with written work with PPE. Applicants are probably handing in essays from such a wide range of subjects and sending in an english essay for example may not really give an indication as to how good you'll be at writing an economics essay.
Oh well, it's not really like any of us have to worry about it now anyway (fortunately).

i beg your pardon?:s-smilie: :s-smilie: sorry... i dont have a clue what you're talking about...
HAT = History Aptitude Test
It's part of the application process for history at Oxford (and possibly other universities?)

Oh right, well no. not at oxford, at least for History and Politics you didn't have an entrance test (thats partly why i hesitated so long between history and politics, and ppe...)

History and Politics applicants do take the HAT.
Applicants in History or any joint courses involving it take the HAT. History and English applicants can choose whether they want to do the HAT or the ELAT.

it has changed since last year. you didn't have a written test when i applied to oxford....apparently they've chosen to put entrance test in more subjects this year...

I have just done some updates to the guide.

I need someone to get me links and information for the updated reading list

I need someone to get me more information regarding the pre-admission test

I need someone to pay me millions of pounds

I need someone to look over and spot errors in the guide
What do you need to know about the test?
Anything that is worth knowing if you a new applicant. Dunno...
Well, here's the site for the test as currently used.

Tom - I know I said I would write something about the test for you, sorry for forgetting about that!

I'm a bit busy at the moment meeting my offer ( ) but after exams I would be happy to spend some time updating the info on the thread regarding applications. This thread has helped me a lot and so I am eager to give something back!
Ditto above.

Now I should really go revise.

I already put this into the guide when I updated it a few days back.

Oh. Sorry about that.
It might be a good idea to have a kind of 'recommended reading' list for potential applicants. It's a question that gets asked quite often.
I think there was a fairly comprehensive list a few pages back - I'll try and find it...
