Different tutors may well have different policies. A friend of mine was told by a tutor (I won't name the college in question) that he wouldn't be accepted without A-level maths.

ALso - tucker, I'd recommend that you don't name tutors on here, or even say "a tutor at X college". Tutors have been known to google themselves, or something more general such as "philosophy tutors at X college". No point saying anything in public that you wouldn't want your (potential) tutors to read.

advice taken will edit post now  THANKS

So you should edit what you quoted of his too
I am stongly thinking of applying to oxford for PPE. But i have chosen to do chem, maths, further maths and economics for AS next year.

Are these ok for PPE?

i will probably change them. But what subjects are ideal for the coarse, history RS e.t.c. Should i change to one of these subjects?

thanks

Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Maybe a language or essay based subject would be good too?

Sorry to hijack a bit, but I'm taking my A2s next year and applying and am taking AS maths as well.

Obviously it'sonly half of A2, but will this do anything to clear up the weakness in the application? Or even be a bonus in showing my dedication to studying the Economics side?

Cheers, and apologies to OP

You should be able to if you click 'edit' under your post where you quoted him...
I would say take RS - its an essay subject + VERY relevant to PPE as it teaches you the basics behind the philosophy side, and depending on what modules you take in the a-level and what board it can also help on the political and economical philosophy
Does Oxford count A level Philosophy as a mickey mouse one?

Although loads of 6th forms don't do it.

Yeah, go for English lit or History otherwise.
i would say an ideal combo is:

Maths
Economics
History
Politics or a Modern Language

This is the exact combo that the successful PPE candidates from my school had. Its a well rounded choice and complements the degree well.

Philosphy is mickey mouse i think. History, Eng Lit are way more highly thought of
they might do with philosophy but certainly not with RS - that i know is definitely considered a traditional subject

virtually everyone i knew had it and everyone said it helped immensely when it came to the interviews (with some more than others, i.e. some only had an interest in the politics and economics side)
Not to hijack this thread but I don't see the point in replicating one on the same subject(ish).

I do Politics and Philosophy and will be doing Economics at AS next year do you think these are good choices for PPE or will they not want me to have that knowlege already?

Essay based subject & maths.
nope :frown:
Well on the website it says history and maths are helpful (as I'm sure you know). I'm a possibly PPE applicant and I'm going to take:
Maths, history, english lit, german, politics. (My school doesn't offer economics).
A friend of mine does PPE at Oxford. She did science subjects too, but she did have R.S and other arty subjects.

If I were you I'd drop further maths and do either R.S/Politics instead
Hey guys, there's probably thousands of past threads that are similar but oh well...
I was wondering what the typical PPE student profile is like? Could either current or past PPE students list their profiles, i.e. like a brief CV - gcse grades, as/a2 grades etc...

I'm also unsure about the following. For a course like PPE which requires no specific subjects, could a 3A offer be completed with any collection of subjects providing they are good enough? For example, if I was to get 7A's at AS and 6A's at A2 (and they don't include CT or GS) could I use any combination to fill up the offer?

Thanks
