yes check out the first year reading list at the begining of this thread. Try reading seperate book on Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Just search "Philosophy reading" in the search bar and check the threads and the same with politics and economics.

Hope that helps

How do you find the concept of the PPE course? Hard? Challenging?

What A levels (and their grades) did you get in to Oxford? Was the amount of time and work into those A levels worth it?

Nope, none at all.

That being said, if I was a PPEist rather than a film studies postgrad at Anglia Ruskin, this is how I would answer your questions:

I find the concept of the PPE course very difficult. Conceptually I can grasp a single honours degree with no trouble, once there are two subjects it's a big increase in difficulty but with a struggle I can manage. Sadly it really is almost impossible to understand the concept of a degree that not only take *3* subjects but also seems to draw in so many people of such varying good sense that want to study it.

Once again, if I were a PPEist I'd have done 5 A levels, and no, it really wouldn't have been worth it, the 30< minutes a night I spent on homework would have almost killed me. Film studies is much better.

p.s. Ignore my signature, it's an in joke with some Cambridge people.
im so academic

I found aspects of the History of Philosphy course mind boggling. Formal Logic was a complete mind**** and I dropped it.

Chemistry - A
Maths - A
Economics A
(Further Maths, AS-Level, A)

They place the applicants on a bell curve; I was in the top half of the 99th percentile for both critical thinking and mathematical reasoning. I didn't get feedback on the PPE essay supplement to the TSA.

In New York, I interviewed with Nicholas Owen, a Politics professor from Queen's college. I was sent to a side room with a sheet of questions and an essay. The questions related to philosophy (logic and ethics) and the essay was a persuasive piece on an aspect of political theory. I had 30 minutes to look over these. I was then sent to interview. Upon entering, I was asked why I wanted to study PPE. My answer was cut short as we went headlong into the philosophy questions. I was able to give correct answers to the questions listed on the page; I was then pressed with more complex and in-depth extensions of the initial questions. I answered these until I was brought to one where I couldn't provide a satisfying answer. Then, Dr. Owen coached me into deriving the correct answer from findings I had already made. I was then asked to take a position on the political theory issue, for or against the position of the essay author. I then had to defend this position against Dr. Owen's arguments. We went back and forth until time elapsed, at which point I was prompted for any general questions about Oxford, student life, etc.

I had a good experience and I'd say PPE is a safer subject to interview at an international center than a more specialized one. However, if you can, it's certainly better to visit Oxford.

How do we know which professors will come abroad and interview us?
Hi,

Was hoping for some advice on what the best subjects would be at AS to do PPE at Oxford, or otherwise Politics at another university.

I have to choose 4 subjects, and History and Politics are two I definitely want to do. So far I've put down English and Latin for the other two, but I don't think I'd enjoy either of them, and if there were another alternatives that would be relevant for PPE/Politics and also considered traditional (rather than vocational) then I would consider them!

Thanks very much.
Politics, Philosophy & Economics?
You don't have any Science subjects down either, Oxford like some variation.
Go for some social sciences like economics & philosophy.

Thing is, I found iGCSE Maths quite challenging.... I think I'll probably scrape an A, but I can just imagine AS Maths being way too difficult for me.. I mean, I can learn methods, but it's just when it comes to applying the methods on different types of questions that I struggle on..

I thought subjects like economics and philosophy at AS aren't traditional?

Thanks
lol do philosophy for your 4th choice!!! :p:

really its up to you lol

You might want to think again about studying economics at undegraduate level then.
You don't have to do all traditional subjects to get an offer! Philosophy is a well-respected subject!
And don't do ENglish and Latin just because you think it looks good, do a subject that you actually like!

Economics isn't traditional but it is respected and so is Politics although Politics at AS is basic but at A2 its completely different and becomes tougher and more academic I am not trying to put you off Politics or anything but I have just finished AS and we have started looking at A2 and its a huge stepping stone.

Economics and Philosophy are quite traditional - moreso than Politics, probably. I second the suggestion to take maths, though - you'll have to know some (and presumably apply it to economic situations) as part of the economics side of the degree, so it makes sense to get a headstart.
Do what you enjoy. Be careful with doing A levels in things like philosophy and politics though. I applied for politics at uni, and will be studying it in september. I have never studied politics before - they were just happy that I had a variety of subjects (Latin, English, Economics and Classical Civilisations).

I have the same problem I found GCSE very challenging but it is so important for PPE that I "have" to take it hopefully with lots of revision outside school I should get an A. History is equallyimportant and highly regarded.

Economics is highly regarded to and philosophy is also seen as very academic. Its Politics that is the weakest but by no means "not regarded".

I want to do PPE to I am taking History, Maths, Politics and Philosophy.

I wanted to do Economics too but they won't let me, bring on september XD.

That's maybe a little harsh - presumably he'll focus on the Ps, so he'll only have to pass Prelims in Economics before dropping it.
Reply 1919
Forget Philosophy as a subject. Oxford don't take it that seriously. A combination like Maths, Economics, History and a Science or English would be good.
