Toning, eurgh horrible word.

Tone=Low body fat+Developed muscles.

Swimming will help your body quite alot, its a good cardio work out and if you push yourself hard enough then the muscle will develop somewhat. As for getting the body fat down, it'll help alot more than the typical female thing is and eat nothing. Work out your BMR, eat slightly above that and do all this, the fat'll come off slowly but it will come off.

Swimming will make you fitter and thinner basically. Though its not so much the volume as the intensity that'll help it, though both are important

I love swimming, full body work out etc. Try this, it should last around an hour:

5 × 50m sprint freestyle

Rest with 20 seconds between each set

5 × 100m sprints – any stroke

Rest 40-60 seconds between each set

The remaining time of your hour, swim at regular pace non-stop for 15-30 minutes

With swimming you have to go at least 3 times a week to improve, so 40 lengths (25m pool I assume?) 3 times a week is a good amount.

seems like a lot of work, and if your doing that much i wouldnt say your really sprinting.

Try IM medleys for time.
25m front
25m back
25m breastroke
25m fly

allow yourself 3 mins to do this, and a 30 sec rest inbetween. If you finish with time to spare, add this as extra time to your rest. Repeat 5 times.

As you get better you can do one of 2 things, either increase the stroke lengths to 50m, or reduce the allotted time to complete the set.

40 laps isn't very much, you'll find you can do a lot more than that.

I want to take advantage of this amazing pool my brother discovered, which is apparently always empty, and I was wondering how good swimming was for toning up? I was thinking of doing 40 laps three times a week over the summer to do this, but I don't know whether doing more or less than this would be better. Thanks

I was only able to do 40 laps because I'd been swimming for a while and had the strength to do so. If you're able to do it, then great! Go for it

But don't over do it - remember to eat more than normal because you don't want to end up as a tonk twig XD

If you have a good level of fitness, you CAN do that...that isnt even hard. HIT training is so much better than just endurance swimming.

I agree with the HIT comment, as if you look at the alternative i posted, it follows a HIT hypothesis.
My concern is that if the OP is a decent swimmer "sprinting" as much as you suggest may slow them into a window where theyre not going as fast as they could be. Not knocking as a routine, it was just a point i was flagging up

Swimming is amazing. I used to go every week day (25 laps though) and my body looked great. I think it's perfect for toning up IMO.
