dianette for acne?

hey, i have really persistent acne and am sick of it - have tried antibiotics, gels, everything. i'm on the pill loestrin at the moment and it has slightly improved my skin but not enough. i'm going to the docs tomorrow and will probably be put on dianette, but does anyone have any info about it? i keep hearing bad things about putting on weight, loss of sex drive etc, basically it works against the testosterone in your body, which worries me a bit! anyone have any experience with it?

I took it for polycystic ovaries. It cleared up my skin too...

It does have side effects but that doesnt mean youll have them. Im on it for PCOS too and it has helped with my acne but i havent notice weight gain or anything. Im also going on Metaformin which helps you lose weight as PCOS makes you gain it, but you would only be put on this if you are diagnosed with more than acne. You can either try it or not but there are other things your doctor can give you like extra strong creams.

However I do warn you that dianette has a higher risk for stuff like Deep Vein Thrombosis so dont just go on it for acne if yours is working, its not a miracle pill and there are other things to try.

I didn't really put on weight on it and my skin cleared up. I did have realllllllllllllllly bad mood swings and got really depressed and suicidal for a bit but I don't know how much of that was down to the pill as I was on the pill for around 1 year and felt depression for about 2-3 months that passed soon after. But I think whenever I forgot to take the pill I always felt better the next day. They've changed it to clairette anyway. I'm on Yasmin anyway and thats pretty stress-free but my skin still isn't completely clear! But yeah anything less than the pill like antibiotics, gels and all that malarky won't work on severe acne.

I've been on it twice now for acne and it's really made a difference to my skin - I was taken off it for a year during which time I tried Marvelon and Yasmin, and my skin got much worse so I know it's definitely the Dianette that's helped it. I've not had any bad side effects from it, it's even started to make my periods shorter and lighter which is awesome.

I'm on it and I think it did help clear up my skin alot at the beginning, but it's kind of reached a point where it never seems to get any better. Or maybe i'm being unrealistic hoping for it to clear up completely? As for the side effects, I've never experienced any mood swings, although I have put on weight. Then again, that could easily be my own fault.

Have you tried Differin cream for acne?

Reply 7

Yeah, be cautious of the side-effects and make sure there are no inherited blood disorders in the family.

Quinoderm is a cream and has helped my persistent spots (not what you'd call acne, however) so perhaps see about that? What about changing your diet as well?

Not sure if this helps, but roaccutane completely solved my problem. 6 years of working through all imaginable creams/gels/antibiotics. Went onto roaccutane, and my skin is completely clear after 3 months.

omg i just started taking that today!! really worried about the weight thing though, because i'm a recovering anorexic, but my doc said she'd monitor me closely if i started putting on weight...

I've been on it for a few weeks-so far, my skin's gone worse and I've had a few strange moody episodes...I've cried a few times over little things :p: I've really paranoid about putting on weight, so I've just been watching what I'm eating. My cup size has increased though  No complaints about cheekiness levels decreasing either.
I'm going to complete the 3 months and then go back to GP. There's a history of strokes and depression in my family, so reading all this makes me wonder if I should be on it...

I've been on it just over a month, it's sorted out my skin quite well so far. I haven't gained weight or lost my sex drive... Or anything bad really

i was on dianette for about 2 years, then came off it for a while, and i'm back on it again now; i think it does wonders for skin (essentially it is a treatment for acne but as a side effect it acts as the pill, so be careful if unprotected ladies, cos it's not meant for contraception!!) but for me, it takes a long time for the medication to actually allow my skin to look clear.

i've used so many treatments for it in the past, but dianette is probably one of the best - alongside antibiotic but they don't tend to like prescribing it long term! just be careful with blood clots, that seems to be the main problem!

That's one of the most stupid things I've read today. It's just as effective as a contraceptive as any other combined hormonal contraceptive pill, providing you take it correctly like you should be doing with any pill anyway. It's just that you shouldn't be taking it for contraception reasons alone due to the hormones in it. If you don't have an issue with acne or hirsutism then there are several other alternatives that won't have such a drastic effect on your hormonal balance.

I have had Acne for about 2 years now and I'm 17. It's really pissing me off the fact i'm going to live through my prime with ugly spots on my face and really affects my confidence. I startyed taking Erythromycin and after about a year the spots looked asif they had started to clear up. I then developed a rash all over my body so i stopped taking the Erythromycin and all my spots came back. I then began taking the Erythromycin after a month of stopping and they didn't seem to work as i may have become immune to them. I currently have been taking Doxycycline for around 3 months and no improvements. I went to the Dermatologist today and he was suggesting i go on Roaccutane but due to the side affects I don't think im prepared to take it was well as having no alcohol and not going out in the sun whilst being even spottier and dry and crusty for a while. I really need help to get rid of this it is getting me down so much so I am thinking of going for Chinese Acupuncture, anyone tried this and anyone got any advice please?

I wasn't meaning it was for contraception alone! My doctor told me that as it's acne treatment, it's not specifically meant to be a form of contraception, so he said something along the lines of.. if i fell pregnant on it, the company wouldn't be liable as the don't say it's a contraceptive form. :s-smilie: Either way, no need to flame me for it! You just said yourself it's not a primary form of contraception with the fact it's an acne treatment..

Been on it for nearly 18 months. Really helped my skin

I was the same, no antibiotics or gels cleared it, now I only get a few every now and again.

Tried for 6 years to clear it before I went on dianette

It's actually a very small price to pay for having clear skin... it won't last forever! Plus, people differ in how sensitive they get to the sun on Roaccutane - personally I even went tanning (back in the days before I cared about sun damge) and had no sensitivity whatsoever. There are also lots of creams and lotions you can use to relieve the dryness, my skin felt dry but with some extra strength moisturiser it looked completely normal. If you start and find it so unbearable, you can always stop. Roaccutane was the best thing I ever did for my skin, and saved me a lot of worry and money since it cleared everything up.

I can't really say anything about the acupuncture, other than that there isn't any scientific evidence I'm aware of that it will do anything at all for your acne. Worst case scenario though, is you end up spending a lot of money for nothing.

Well its worked perfectly well as a contraceptive for nearly 18 months for me....I've not got pregnant yet.....

They don't recommend any pill for contraception really, although pretty much all are 99% effective if taken properly (I think)

Also for the side effect reasons, like cancer and clotting etc, its only licensed for 3 years max.
