They're harmless but, they do look a little like horses sometimes.

In what way have I attached them to be an evil menance in a university? And yes, I am ignorant on the whole subject, that's why i asked. Coming from a state school, privately educated students have always been stereotyped, and not once have I actually stereotyped anybody, I've actually come to be quite open minded about it. I may have been wrong in classing them as 'Rahs' so sorry for that, it would probably have been better if I just said rich students. Stereotypes are a very powerful thing, so I was just asking whether they were true or not, otherwise i wouldn't have asked. Sorry If i have offended you, but you'd understand if you weren't coming from a privilleged background (like myself), where most of your friends are either locked up in prison or doing some form of crime.

I really didn't mean to get on anyones nerves :o:

I just think the whole idea of class sterotyping is beyond me. Don't fall in to a trap of classing one person over another because of what schooling they go to or whether they wear Jack Wills. Has anyone thought that Jack Wills behind the logo and price is actually comfortable clothing as well as sometimes smart casual?

Some Rahs are obviously going to be annoying and b****y but most of them are like you or me. State or private you still have the ability to make friends and socialise; sure differences are there but theres going to be differences in loads of people.

I know a girl from one of the best private schools in the country yet she has been in a relationship with a guy who lives in a council flat. She is a 'rah' and He is a 'chav' yet they seem to make a perfect couple as both are nice.

What i'm trying to say is don't try and sterotype them at all. Everyone is a person in the end, I think it's pathetic that people should be classed by what their background is; It's like sterotyping ethnics, there really is no point.
Inverse snobbery

2nd reply-- To be honest, I don't agree that all rah girls are bound to have exactly the same proportions of nice and nasty people as the rest of the population. Many will have been spoilt their entire lives and will arguably lack a certain degree of empathy. I think the "rah" trend of oversized JW hoodies and massive hair probably points to quite a shallow, following-the-crowd personality. It's a stereotype, but it is one I have found to be fitting sometimes. But it depends on your definition of rah, I interpret it as a horse-mad big-haired JW-clothed girl from the country who says "yah" a lot. However some people would think of me as fairly posh from my accent, but I've been to state school and don't dress like a "rah" so I would hope my voice would not be reason enough to class me as one!
But this is all foolish conjecture  I will get negged by all the rahs now.

Wow. A lot of people are diving all over me at the moment.

Let me explain: I'm just a little sick of people slagging off every 'half-popular' stereotype, be it 'rahs' or any other social group. It just pisses me off and seeing this thread just kind of annoyed me a little. I'm aware now that the OP didn't intend it to be malicious, therefore I apologise for being rude. However the fact that most people that slag off 'rahs' are people that quite frankly aren't open minded enough to just consider maybe it's them, maybe they're the dickheads? I don't know whether it's because they feel intimidated or otherwise, but if you just go up and talk to one.. you'll find out that they actually don't bite. From my experience, they're very easy people to talk to and the fact you aren't even putting in any effort just shows how sociable you are.

Sorry.. I do realise I'm not directly replying to you, I just wanted you to read my response above. I'm not having a go at people who have justifiable reasons why they don't like them. That's none of my business, obviously.

I thought rah stood for "rich arse-hole", so in essence when people talk negatively about rahs it's not rich people, it is the rich people who consider those that are less well off to be peasants. Rah is by definition a negative term and not one labelling all rich people, only the ones that are *********.

I've met a fair few rich girls at uni who are very nice people and do not come across as condescending etc, however the ones i'd consider as rahs are okish people but they generally seem to live in somewhat of a vaccuum and whether whittingly or not, belittle those with little money by making comments that display a complete lack of understanding of some people's situation. For example, in trying to comfort a friend who had very little money one rah says to her poorer friend, "i understand what you mean, my mum had to quit work and now we have to survive on the 100k a year my dad earns".

Likewise with other youth subcultures (as you've noted), including those based on music - emos, goths etc. It's all the same. Always amusing when some fourteen year old chavs in small gangs take offence to my style because I have long hair. I'm waiting for a one-on-one scenario but I won't get my hopes up.

 what a way to comfort a friend

Having gone to a school full of them heres what I can tell you. Some are nice, some are not. Some live in a dream world where money is easy to come by others don't. They aren't really all that different to other girls, just a little more on the expensive side to please at times.

This, but you'll find that they aren't as down to earth as every one else and some are in a world of their own.

Jeez. From what I have experienced at Durham the ones with the most financially backed parents are ones who aren't easy with the idea that they are, in their own words (not mine), at an unfair advantage compared to others. Being from a state school with low earning parents, I said it's not that much different to myself to a poor family in Africa, or elsewhere for that matter. The ones who dress most 'Rah' that I experienced tended to go to an all-girls school and/or grammar, rather than private.

I don't really hold somebodies wealth against them, it's good for them really, but i can understand people getting annoyed at comments which just show a complete ignorance of the real world. Overall many rich people are nice, i think the materialistic braggers give the rest a bad name.

That's fantastic.

I think I know what you mean by "rah": there were a lot of them at the Edinburgh open day. Very beautiful girls, beautiful clothes: I think there would be a difference in their company compared to state-school girls (like me), but probably not that big a difference. Like someone said on here, they're not a different breed.

Get a life. You seem to spot rahs as some kind of evil menace in a university... How would all the poor people like it if the Rahs classed anyone who isn't from private school to be a commoner or chav?
Some people are just ridiculously ignorant.

Yeah. Wasn't there a TV series about secret millionaires or something? I lose touch of the TV because of university but I saw an 'advert' for it on BBC1 and someone said he found it difficult to know whose his friends are. Lots of people, regardless of magnitude of wealth, are materialistic by nature. When I was 17, quite a few people asked when I was getting a car. Always puzzled me because of the sheer cost of young drivers' insurance, MOT, tax and petrol. Granted it wouldn't have been anything flashy but it is still nonetheless materialistic. Saying this I'm actually after a Lotus Elan (1990s version) as a first car after formal education (I'm above 21) but it's more to do with having a good British car and no jackass tailgates and crashes into me because their insurance premium rockets. I used to want a Honda Goldwing but it's more expensive than an Elan. Plus I'd have to wear leather in the baking summers etc.

Mmmm, rah girls...

Rich girls turn me on.
I fully agree with Malcolm in this instance.

You'd be surprised how dirty a rich girl can be as well.. though isn't that kind of a given? If they spend most of their nights getting ready for church with their Father and heading down to Marc Jacobs, they need a little time to 'let their head down'.
I take no notice of them

i get called a chav and/or commoner all the time as do most people so if thats the best you can come up with then youre further proving a point of why rahs are intolerable to talk to
