    I tried playing this xvid file in vlc and divx but didnt work. I went to http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ and downloading it, installed, but it still doesn't work. What do i need to do?

    If it doesn't work in VLC then there must be something wrong with the file?

    Yeah, file could be corrupt or something if VLC doesn't play it. Perhaps try downloading a codec pack such as the K-Lite one.
    http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm (probably won't do anything though as you've already tried downloading one)
    Do you have any other XVID files? Do they play?

    Sounds like its corrupt to me. I use the DivX codec and that does the job for me.

    If VLC doesn't play it, the file is corrupt.

    Edit: Or encrypted. VLC doesn't play files downloaded from the iPlayer or 4OD for example.
