    im into my loud music and my new laptops built in speakers just arent up to the job at all

    no idea what to get, any recommendations? i hear that a 2.1 set-up is best (5.1 arent compatible with laptops?)

    More watts = more power so yes generally louder yes. Might just watch this thread for any good suggestions as I was considering getting some myself.

    Get the external sound card here. http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=963858

    Get some decent 5.1 speakers, hook it up, sorted. But depends on your budget.

    i dont know anything about computers. but i assume the external hardware just allows much better sound systems...

    as primary function of laptop was for music i think i should invest. at the moment im limited to a 40W 2.1 system thats around £50

    how much about for a big powerful 5.1 and sound card?

    cheers

    Well if you go for brands like Creative then the 5.1 speakers start from ~£40 upwards. £55 for the sound card, Clicky

    Music or games?

    For music get a sound card with phono outputs and get an amp and monitors, maybe with a sub as well if you fancy spending the money. My system, which admittedly is bottom of the range - or just above it at least, sounds amazing compared to all other laptop speakers, or most speakers in general. Cost about £200-£250, (i forget) but by god its worth it. The clarity and depth of the sound compared to my old 2.1 system is incredible, I hear notes I never knew existed.

    Mine runs like this;
