LEEDS! Chinese and Japanese.... advice please!

Helloo!

I will begin to study Chinese and Japanese at Leeds this September.

This is obviously a very difficult course and as I am starting from pretty much scratch in both languages I would like to prepare as much as possible for the course commencement.

If anybody (particularly those already on this course) can offer any advice for what things are best to learn (eg Hiragana, Katakana) or what would be useful to know for when beginning this course, I would greatly appreciate any input.
Also, for people who are on this course, I would be thankful if you could briefly outline which areas of culture/history etc would be useful to have a background knowledge on (at least for the beginning of the course)

Are there societies for Chinese / Japanese at Leeds? If so, has anyone had any experience with these???

Any recommendations/advice would be highly appreciated!!

If anyone else is beginning this course in Sept, please message me!

Many many thanks!!

I am also a novice learner of Japanese though not for a degree but for fun.

You may want to start with

and other resources on this excellent web site for people just like us

Good luck!
I'm studying chinese at leeds in september, and after talking with some of the lecturers etc. it appears that even though the language is from scratch they expect you to be somewhere around GCSE level within a few weeks - Also apprantly alot of the people on the course already have GCSE chinese so they recomend to learn at least the first 100 characters before the course starts so you don't feel over whelmed. I beleive that leeds sends through a little language pack before the start of the course for you to work through. Look forward to seeing you in our chinese lectures!!!

Is there not an updated version of this thread??

I've made one here (if any other people are looking at this right now and want to answer some of these questions) https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=92307356&highlight=
