Are black people overrepresented in the media?

I am talking specifically about television, movies, music etc...

The question is are black people overrepresented in the media in the UK. Black people make up 2 percent of the British population which is considerably smaller than asian populations living in the UK which is roughly double. However i cannot help but notice there is so much black culture television shows, much more black music and many black people orientated films.

It appears to me that the UK is trying to copy the US where there is a much more sizable black population roughly 11 percent of the population.

Could it be said that there is a form of discrimination against other minority groups in favour of black media?

Do you consider the media in the UK to push a black supremacy message? (consider the media hype over Lewish hamilton and the lack of media hype over jenson button)

Are black people over represented and what reason would you give?

If you have nothing worthwhile to contribute then don;t bother.

I understand you have been brainwashed to follow every political correct line than the government can get away with, but it is clear that Black people have a much larger presence in the media than asian people although Asian people make up a much larger portion of the British population.

Discuss or.. **** off.

The only thing I find is that people like the BBC draft black presenters in for anything vaguely resembling a black story. For example, almost every time they had someone talking about Michael Jackson, it had to be a black journalist. Why?
Can black people only be represented to a certain extent?!
I was wondering this when I heard about BBC One Extra, apparently dedicated to "black music", but I'd estimate about 60% of the music played on Radio One is RnB.... might have to do a bit of research...

edit; I am quite surprised that black people are only 2% of the British population.... I thought it was closer to about 15%, maybe I watch too much television!

Well, I certainly feel that it is important for ethnic minorities (well, minorities in general) to be properly represented in the media. In fact, I wouldn't say that overrepresentation would be a bad thing at all. I talk to my Mum who was brought up in a time when a black person on the telly was a cause for celebration.

It pleases me that society has moved forward since then. I don't think facts and figures are important here; what is important is that black youths have role-models and people they can identify with, instead of feeling alienated. If this means slight overrepresentation, so be it.

(I'm black, btw).

I don't know how many of you watch(ed) Newsround, but from it you would certainly get the impression that white people are at best a plurality, if not an outright minority, based on their choice of interviewees.

I hope you're being ironic.

Otherwise, you absolutely reek of Daily Mail.

To answer your question - No. Does it bother you?
Let us remember that much of 'the media' has it's base it the big cities.
According to the 2001 census 10.91% of London's population identified as black.

Damn STRAIGHT, we've gotta limit all BLACK MUSIC because music is actually defined by RACE not actual musical content to only 2% of all music played ever and no one is allowed to say otherwise and get that black president off the TV FFS where do we live Africa I don't think so where's Nick Griffin to save the day.

In other words, go to sleep because it's well past your bedtime and mummy and daddy will not be best pleased that you are breaking your 9 o'clock curfew! Deary me.
