Switching pills

Has anyone switched contraceptive pill brands because their old one gave them side effects like depression etc and had better success with the new brand? I'm on Dianne 35 (dianette in England) and I'm thinking of switching but I wonder if switching brands will actually help.

I would suggest that the best thing to do would be to make an appointment to see your GP and get them to talk you through all the different options and what side effects etc are possible with different ones. I would also suggest that different people react differently to different pills, so just because someone else has had bad side effects to one, it doesn't mean that you will....but if you are unhappy with the one that you are on, and feel it doesn't suit you, then definitely make enquiries as to what else is avaliable and the best person to ask all these questions is your GP.

Hope you get it all sorted....

How long have you been on your current pill? When I was on Microgynon 30 I got horribly depressed, but that only lasted for the first couple of weeks..

I did change my pill because of a particular side effect, but I don't think it worked. However, I think it's because that particular side effect would happen on ALL pills.. The best person to tell you whether it'd work is your doctor

It could help because different pills have different amounts of active ingredients in it. Dianette is used as a treatment for skin problems as well as a contraceptive, so getting a pill that is just a contraceptive may well get rid of some symptoms. However that isn't always the case. Talk it through with your GP or a nurse or someone who can give you a definitive answer because it depends on a number of other factors.

I had some pretty bad side effects on my old pill (a single hormone one) including depression, excessive bleeding etc, but I stuck with it for one packet anyway and then stopped. When I went back to the doc and told her she said that was completely ridiculous and you should never get any side effects that bad. Quite common that the first pill they give you isn't right for you though.

I'm gonna start on another (combined) pill soon but I decided to have a break - it kinda scares me putting all those hormones into my body :s.

I've been on it for like 5 years with about a year break after the first 2 years and I'm not too unhappy about it but I thought maybe things could be better. I am of course going to see my GP but they don't ever give good advice. Seriously I have researched my particular pill myself and the stuff I've found out doctors never told me even when I asked specific questions (I've asked different doctors too). That's why I want to know if anyone has actually switched pill and felt an improvement. I guess I can only give it a go and see but things aren't too bad now and I don't want to make them worse for a few months just for the vague possibility of improvement.
Has anyone tried Yasmin? They promote it as being like Diane without so many side effects but I heard a lot a bad things about it from people.

What bad things have you heard? as far as I'm aware it's generally very well tolerated as it features a new type of progestogen, drosperone (sp)

you've been on dianette too long. you're only supposed to be on it for 2 years.

dont try marvellon, it makes you fat.

been on yasmin AND dianette. didn't realise dianette made you depressed but that would explain why that since i changed a couple weeks i've been bouncing off the walls kinda happy some days, and not really unhappy at all. except i'm getting spotting and i havent run my packets together.

I have heard people say that Yasmin made them suicidal, gave them blood clots that nearly killed them, reduced their sex drive etc. (Of course the site by the people who make Yasmin just ignore this and advertise it as a pill you can take and still feel good). They are all of course side effects that can be experienced by anyone on any type of the pill. But it makes me nervous about changing pills from one that is ok to an unknown.

I know some people would reckon I've been on Dianne for too long but doctors in Australia see nothing wrong with it and really the bad things associated it (DVT, increased risk of cancer) are also associated with most types of the pill. Also these side effects are an interaction of your body with the drug.

I was thinking of asking to Yasmin instead of Dianne next time I see the doctor but I'm worried about the chance of bad side effects and also I think it's much more expensive :s-smilie: Does anyone know about the cost difference? I'm on a generic brand of Dianne so it's only $40 AUD instead of $55. I hear Yasmin is around $65 :s-smilie:

They're all free in the UK regardless, so I doubt any of us would know much about cost. I did however read somewhere that Microgynon (most common UK pill) costs English NHS services about £2 for 3 months supply, whereas yasmin costs something like £15. Ouch. So glad these things are free. Move to the UK!

People seem to be forgetting that different pills affect different people differently, because, shock horror, we are all different. Going around saying things like 'marvelon makes you fat, dianette makes you depressed' as if they are definitive facts isnt going to help anybody. weight gain and depression are both things that can be experienced on any type of pill. Some people may get them, others will get on fine without even noticing a difference.

It was really a fact that 'marvelon makes you fat', and that everyone was bound to experience this, do you really think the pill would still be available?

The only way to find out is to try it for yourself, and ignore sweeping generalisations made by some people from their experiences, which are more than likely going to be completely different from your own!

LOL I forgot that in England you have a good health care system. In Australia most birth control pill are not covered by PBS. Even when covered by PBS they aren't free. I think that this is a serious problem for young teens without jobs who need birth control.

I'm really a bit angry that I may have to continue on a drug that other countries consider dangerous because of cost! Probably the reason they don't make a fuss about Dianette in Australia is because it would put pressure on the government to cover it with PBS. Oh well I guess they can't cover everything :frown:

It's really comforting that other people haven't had problems with Yasmin. I know everyone's body reacts differently but it really is important to know what other people have experienced. Thanks to those people who have told me about the success with Yasmin
So no one here has experienced weight gain with Yasmin? Because I'm about to start it, I just bought my first supply. I did have one friend who said she gained alot of weight on it, but then again I have another who said she was fine. I know it has a mild diuretic effect...my gynecologist said that you go to the bathroom quite frequently at first. I'm mostly concerned about the weight gain and what it does to your skin. I was on Alesse before, which is a brand that has a very low dose of hormones, and I was completely fine on that...but I want something that will help clear up my acne. I'm worried about switching to a brand with a higher dose of hormones though. What has everyone else experienced? How long does it take for your acne to clear up? Do you break out at first?

Nope, no weight gain at all. Infact the opposite happened: my appetite vanished for the first week. I'm not really that spotty, just around my T zone and its really helped, and pretty much instantly (week 1 - 2).

Yeah I head about the diuretic effect. I hope it's very very very mild. My employer is a jerk and sometimes I have to wait up to 6 hours for a break and so I don't need a drug that really makes me need to go to the bathroom more. Have people who are on Yasmin noticed the diurectic effect much?
