When someone gets shot in the head they die instantly right? Apparently your heart controls itself, so why would you die from a head shot? You may go all floppy loose the power of the senses, but what makes you dead? Just a thought

You don't always die from being shot in the head, it's just very likely..

Doesn't your brain tell your heart to beat?

It depends where you get shot. Some people have survived.

And if you can't control your breathing then you will still die.

In the correct conditions, your heart will continue to beat as it has a pacemaker. The brain controls the pacemaker and thus heart rate.

I thought the heart was myogenic or something. Or is that only the impulse to beat, with the brain controlling pace etcetera?

The heart is myogenic? i think thats the right word

meaning it contracts itself... althought the brain can regulate this beating

Edit: beat by the guy above me

and to answer OP's question probably a combination of lack of functional brain...quite important for day to day life.... and maybe even a loss of blood? although you're almost always dead before loss of blood kills you

Even if you don't die on the spot, the massive bleeding (hey, the brain gets most of the oxygenated blood) will kill u shortly. I guess if the bullet hits parts responsible for the movement u can get paralyzed and because of this ur lungs can stop their function and.....u die.....

The SAN (pacemaker) will continue to send impulses to the heart and the heart will beat if the conditions are right. The brain sends impulses to the SAN which can speed up/slow down the frequency at which the SAN sends impulses.

Obviously, if you can't breathe, the heart anaerobically respires and it stops beating.

Maybe it just looks like they're instantly dead because their blown-out brain won't let them move... :holmes:

i dont think people die instanty, its just that they fall to the ground instantly and die few moments later or live to tell the tale.

Just because your heart is beating, it doesn't mean you're alive.

Death is a permanent cessation of metabolism, which is controlled by the brain. If you're shot in the head, chances are your metabolism is going to stop pretty soon (not necessarily instantly).

its worse to be brain dead than just myocardial infarction, if your brain loses its "electricity" then you is ..................
and if you cant breath then how are you supposed to take in oxygen for respiration and if you cant respire aerobically then theres no oxygentaed blood going into coronary arteries and heart muscle doesnt get oxygen

The respiratory center is in the hypothalamus and the pons area; so if u damage that area (in the center of brain) u won't be able to inhale and exhale, and u'll die of oxygen starvation....
