Hello! I'm doing a VS the week after next at a firm I'd really like to work for. Is it necessary for me to apply to them for a training contract, or is that topic probably going to come up as part of my vacation scheme?
The deadline isn't until the 31st July so I could still make an application afterwards, but would they expect me to have made one before if I was interested?

They're certainly not going to expect you to make a TC application before you've done the Vac Scheme. I would say that you should wait at least a week into the scheme before you even think about making the application, and preferably wait until after the scheme so that you've had a bit of time to reflect on it and answer the 'Why Firm X?' question better.
To be honest, they'll probably advise you what to do whilst you're actually on the scheme so ask them when you get there. It may be that the firm has TC assessments throughout the scheme which may culminate with an interview on the scheme.
