When I was in halls 2 years ago I could download a 700MB file in 90 seconds on a good day, 5 minutes on a bad day

    Really?!

    Because 700*8 = 5600
    5600 / 90 ~= 62Mbps

Now 62Mbps is fast; very fast, and especially for a shared connection...

My record in halls was just over 12MB/s which was basically maxing my 100Mb lan card :yep:

FlashGet with 8 files and 10 connections each = speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

    My first day in halls.

Yes, that's megabytes/sec, not megabits. This is approximately 100mbps.

Bare in mind that you won't get these speeds after the first week or so. After people start getting connected the speed tends to drop off with lots of people using it. The speeds can jump from anywhere between 1mb and 100mb depending on the time of day and what point in the semester you are at (eg near exam time).

It's fast enough for gaming ... as long as the ports aren't blocked.

Bear in mind, the speed of the 'net is ridiculously fast, but shared between a lot of people. From 5pm onwards, most days, the internet is slow until about 10pm - because everyone is online, so it's sharing a fast connection between way too many people to keep up.
