I didn't notice that much of a difference in speed at any time of day. Downloading episodes of TV shows took 15minutes at tops and that was due to the website they were being downloaded from. For gaming, I was getting ping times of less than 30ms even when the server was full.

Moving into Halls you should have absolutely no problem with internet speed when gaming, and therefore no excuses if/when you get owned :P

Agree with the 5-10pm thing. Sometimes 10-11 is bad too. Connaught last year called it their "Connaught **** Hour". Nuff said really.

I could get 12.5MB/s solid at any time of day - and I had over 20MB/s once when I ran a cable from a mates room and joined the connections. I know a few people who got banned for a couple of days for using BitTorrent and stuff, but most people I know who used rapidshare and similar were fine. Pings for online gaming and that were just as low as any good domestic broadband so you won't have a problem.

There was of course the weekened where all of halls internet went down, and noone knew what to do without facebook

That's my only problem. Since I won't be taking my games with me I'll rely on torrents for shows/movies/some anime and such and I heard that P2P and general downloads were restricted :/

Torrents they'll just prevent you from accessing the websites if they catch on but if you can get the torrent files sent to you then it should be fine. If you're using usenet, rapidshare etc then it doesn't matter because they just pick up on the number of connections the go in and out of your connection.

    Restrictions on Porn sites?
Haha, nout as far as I'm aware. Only a moron downloads it anyway, no problems with streaming.

p.s. Don't forget to lock your door.

I wonder if you could use a VPN like UltraVPN to avoid getting caught on torrents. Actually, scratch that, I KNOW you can, lol. I used to use it on my old ISP to avoid torrent throttling.

Rapidshare will have to do, possibly usenet.

Also I have a couple of wireless devices - ipod touch, nintendo wii. What connection is it on the walls, ethernet? Can I plug in a wireless router to it. I tihnk it was York that when I went to see peoples rooms people had to hide routers because they weren't allowed...

I dunno how it works because at mine they asked for the mac address of the device used so it might work if you change to routers mac, some unis do wireless so not sure about yours.

yeah it's ethernet. I had a cable wireless router. it was awesome, having wifi was superb. also, nobody cared about me having it, but i did hide it during room inspections (I just put it in a drawer, tbh)

Very much so. =) That as long as it's a cable router, and thus has 5 ethernet ports rather than 4 ethernet and 1 phone, you'll be fine.

Not only that, there is a certain act called "Room Raping". It's pretty much self explanitory. Happens more in smaller halls than the larger ones.

When I was given a tour on the open day, the guy said that they somehow prevent you from using bittorrent and it's impossible. Does anyone know if tunneling does work, and what's the punishment if you do use it?
