How utterly ridiculous, yet more pointless laws.

    Ghastly woman.

NORTHERNERS could be granted 'equal rights' to southerners under extraordinary government plans to stamp out discrimination.

Harriet Harman, the government's equality tsar is said to want to introduce rules that will halt inequality against people 'up North'.

She has reportedly instructed her Equalities Office to look at 'diversity proposals' to stop Londoners and others in the south from dominating national public bodies, or quangos.

Conservatives have rejected the proposals as 'patronising' and as an 'unhealthy obsession' with 'tick-box culture' at the expense of efficiency.

But Blackley MP Graham Stringer said there should be more equal membership of national bodies. He said: "A lot of national quangos are full of professional London quangocrats.

News of the proposals emerged after Equalities Minister Michael Foster was challenged by Yorkshire MP Meg Munn to stop people from the south east from dominating national bodies based in London.

The former Minister for Women and Equality, from Sheffield, demanded to know how 'more people from a wider area' could be called upon to serve on the boards.

The Equalities Office said: "We want to see more diversity in public appointments.

"We have just launched an action plan to get more under-represented groups such as women, ethnic minorities and disabled people on to the local boards of public bodies.

"The plan includes a campaign to encourage people from such groups to apply for public appointments."

If you got sacked or not allowed to get a job for being small/having ginger hair/being Northern or anything else, you'd be pretty cross. But the fact is there is nothing you can do about it. Someone got sacked from their job at a bakery for being too small, without any particular reason for having to be tall in the job, and yesterday asked in the law forum what she could do. Unfortunately, the answer was "nothing". This is the reality of the situation.

Its a perfectly reasonable thing to look at. Why should the entire civil service be dominated by people from the South? This isn't even a law, its more along the lines of guidelines as to how public bodies employ people. The public sector should employ a range of people that is representative of the public it services.

I'm northern... did you not gather? I think she has a good point that most bodies which to an extent dictate our lives are very London-centric. Ensuring a broader base of members would ensure a base of opinion which is more reflective of the UK as a whole.

London is the capital. Big corporations and the civil service is based a lot of London, so workers will be from London. This 'discimination' idea is ********. It's not discrimination, it's the fact that institutions are too London based.

the fact the country is very london-centric is a problem, not an asset. We have multiple large cities and conurbations e.g. Glasgow & Clyde, Greater Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Tyne & Wear etc. but london is given far more public funding per capita without any justification. Very few other countries have this situation, France is probably the only one. Until this ends, we will still have a very large, unacceptable north/south divide.

Actually you can, if you can prove that was the reason for it and that it doesn't impact the performance of your job then you've got good grounds for suing the company for unfair dismissal.

Very clever move. Northerners die younger thus require smaller pension pots.

The problem with unfair dismissal is that it is narrower than discrimination legislation. You have to have been employed continuously for one year, and there has to be an actual dismissal - so firing a employee who worked for 11months for being ginger, or putting someone on crappy jobs because they are small or Northern doesn't count. There are also procedural problems: unlike anti-discrimination legislation, awards for unfair dismissal don't directly address the issue of discrimination.

If you don't qualify for unfair dismissal, you get nothing. I can't see any logical difference for firing someone because they are ginger being any worse than firing someone because they are black.

But thats besides the point really; this concerns how the public sector hires its employees, its not even about a law.
