    I suppose what I meant is that they seem to have sufficiently distinct characters, for a start the architectural differences between the Bailey colleges (+ St Hild and St Bede – I don’t think that’s technically regarded as a Bailey college) and the newer colleges and they have their own sports teams (I don’t know if they all have their own sports teams though).

    I don’t mean that it is exactly like Oxford and Cambridge although I’d be interested to know exactly what particular teaching happens in the colleges at Oxbridge. I mean, I know that Cambridge has a separate History Department for instance and most science teaching must happen outside the colleges surely.

    Essentially:

    Department: Does lectures, seminars etc. for everyone doing the subject.
    Colleges: Do 'supervisions' which are small group discussions for students in the college studying the subject. Occur I think about once or twice a week.
