I am currently employed by River Island. Recently some of us were discussing bank holidays and how we are compensated for working on them. One girl said that we are not paid double pay anymore, instead for each bank holiday we work we are given an extra days holiday. One the supervisors then said that this was untrue and infact we get nothing. She said that if we read our contracts carefully it says that we give away our rights to bank holidays off or extra pay for them.
We are also having a sale this week and some of us are staying till midnight the night before the launch to get all the stock out. We usually finish at 10pm and yet we are not being paid any extra for working unsociable hours.
We are also required to work Christmas eve and boxing day and new years eve also without any extra pay.
I am just curious as to whether this is actually legal or not.

Yeh I'm pretty sure it is legal. They probably use to pay extra and those on old contracts probably do still get extra but over the last couple of years many shops like River Island have made cut backs and a big one is over time so they will have changed the contracts.

I'm not sure about working extra hours. I'm pretty sure they can't ask you to this without extra pay. This is definitely illegal if you are under 18 I think as you can't work past 10pm.
However, the rest is legal.
