Do all jobs have a probationary period? Specifically Boots and John Lewis

Generally, yes. It's a convenient way for an employer to give you very few rights whilst seeing if you're worth the fun tickets they're paying you.

Ditto to Mad Vlad
Probationary periods give you rights sooner than the law does. You generally have to be (I'm assuming the UK law is similar to the Irish one, stands to reason that it would) in emplyment for a year before you have any rights re. unfair dismissal etc. When you finish probation (generally 3 months- sometimes 6 months) you have all your rights.

I work at Primark (yes remember me?) anyway I am on probationary period for three months. This is for them to check if I am worth the pay however all jobs are the same so I think the contract of employment for all jobs including Boots and John Lewis all offer this probation but I think they offer different months and just to warn you they HAVE the right to TERMINATE your contract of employment straight away if they think that you're not capable of the job they offer you during your probationary period.
