    Hi!

Im thinking of taking a grade 4 piano exam next year during the march period so im going to start practising grade 4 pieces and scales etc. for the exam now.

However, there are only pieces + scales now for 2009-2010 (does this mean for the whole of 2009 AND 2010? because i remember the 2009-2010 books came out near the end of 2008 it think) so im not sure if the syllabus will change next year then it will mean i will not be practising the right requirements for the exam.

    thnx

If I remember right, you can do those songs all the way up to the end 2010. So as long as your exam if before the 1st January, 2011, you can do the pieces in that book.

There is a new syllabus every two years, so the next one will be 2011-2012. The last time you can use these pieces is in the first examination of 2011 (march time). There is always one crossover period when you can use either the old or the new syllabus.

Different instruments have different syllabi lengths, piano is usually a 2 year cycle, valid until the end of the spring session in which the new syllabus can be used. Depends on the instrument, last year the new flute and clarinet ones came out and they're valid from 2008-13 (5 years)

ultimately, you're in a good position as you'd have a year and a bit to prepare for the exam based on how at the latest, you could take it winter 2010

She would actually be able to still use those pieces in spring 2011.

cool that's really handy to know that the exam board allows that overlap incase someone needs to resit or slightly delay the exam til the next season
