I've decided that I want to try to learn how to play the guitar, but have no idea where to start!

I may self teach to begin with, and see how that goes before paying for any lessons. Can anyone recommend any good introductory books? 'Guitar for dummies', I guess?

I can't afford anything too expensive so could also do with some advice as to where I can get a decent 2nd hand guitar for a reasonable price.
