And people tipped this man for Prime Minister? He's no better than his predecessor.

Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary, has said he does not "lie awake at night" worrying that the population is going to hit 70million.

Critics have warned that current growth means the population will increase by nine million to hit the 70million mark by 2028, with 70 per cent of the increase caused by new arrivals to the UK.

However, Mr Johnson ruled out imposing a cap on immigrant numbers, and insisted that he did not "lie awake at night" worrying about an increasing population due to new arrivals.

A cap on immigration would harm the economy, he said, adding that Britons should "welcome" immigrants who came to live and work here, and that he was "happy" to live in a multicultural society.

He told MPs on the Home Affairs Committee: "I do not lie awake at night worrying about a population of 70 million.

"I'm happy to live in a multicultural society. I'm happy to live in a society where we not only welcome those coming to live and work in this country, but also where we can go and live and work in other countries."

He said the argument that immigration had made a contribution to the economy was "irrefutable". But he added: "The argument gets more difficult when you get in to hard economic times."

Earlier this week campaign group Migrationwatch UK warned the balance of those settling in the country would have to be reduced to 50,000 from the current level of 237,000 every year.

The Government's points-based system is likely to cut immigrant numbers by around 8 per cent to 217,000.

Sir Andrew Green, the chairman of Migrationwatch, said: "This shows the Government are in denial about the effects of mass immigration that they are promoting, even encouraging.

"The minister should be having nightmares about the impact on our schools, hospitals, environment and quality of life as a result of another 10 million people in England in just 20 years. Instead he has just given up."

Separately, Mr Johnson said the Government had expended too much time and effort trying to pass 42-day anti-terror laws, echoing criticisms by Jacqui Smith, the former Home Secretary at the weekend.

But he refused to rule out introducing a new Bill allowing the extension of terror suspects without charge from 28 days, saying his decision would depend on the advice of the police and security services.

    This.

Those most in favour of the multicultural experiment are those who live furthest from it, which means every mainstream politician who finds themself cosily tucked into some 100% British area.

Oh yes, clearly anything which relays information on immigration is 'racist'.

Stop brandishing around that overused term in such a juvenile manner. You're probably just trolling.

The argument against unrestricted immigration is nothing to do with race. It is all about space.

    This is entirely correct.

Can I be the first to point out that not wanting to impose an arbitrary cap on immigration is not the same thing as wanting unlimited migration. I personally think an arbitrary cap would be stupid due to the fact that circumstances change. If we need more doctors which can't be provided from UK residents and the cap has already been filled, well we're a bit stuffed really.

You can still limit migration without having a fixed number, you just use a points based system or suchlike.

When there's polls being thrust about showing 70% of Britons wanting huge cuts in immigration, and with only 5% of the country wanting to maintain current levels of immigration, it seems Johnson is in very much in the minority.

Maybe an inflexible cap on immigration is not what we need...I dunno.

But even so, immigration to this country needs to be SEVERELY restricted. Virtually nobody wants current levels of migration to persist.

i don't really see what the problem is. i think everyone should be free to live where they want, especially inside the EU. and there is a lot of space left. there are so many run down, unoccupied house that wouldn't need much renevation to make them habitable again, and so much wasteland everywhere, thats no good for anything but building on.

Then consider what will happen to British roads if we have another ten million people. Consider the extra pollution, the extra demand for (and thus increased cost of) houses.

i understand that, perhaps i worded myself wrong :P
i understand the problem, but i don't think it is fair to control where people live. surely people would stop coming once we do actually get full.
