Does your Uni not help you at all with suggested summer placements?

I recommend contacting CK Science. They're a national scientific recruitment agency, and they're excellent. I'm sure they'd be able to find you a short term contract placement somewhere.

Beyond that, just contact as many companies as you can, and ask!

Are you considering doing a year long placement at the end of your 2nd year (if your uni does that, off course)? With the job market the way it is, it may be invaluable. If not then you can definately organise something for next summer, maybe from this autumn onwards. Ask your tutors and career advisors. As for this summer, it may be a bit late unless you or someone in your family has contacts (e.g. a family friend who owns/works in a lab).

Your university would be the best place to start. Most universities offer lab placements to undergrads over the summer lasting 6-8 weeks. There is funding available from various bodies (although competitive). I would approach staff you are interested in working with and see what you can find out.
