Aircraft Technician (Avionics) watch

    Hi Guys

    I'm in the middle of an application for this role, I have my fitness test at 17:00.

    Basically I would like some advice on what to 'study' prior to my specialist training, i've got some books on electronics in general, such as the dummies series! I'm not a whizz on electrics so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    They will train you. They evidently think you have the aptitude to learn, otherwise you'd not get recruited. Just get fit and let them tell you what you need to know.

    Just out of interest, do you know what avionics jamming is and how it's achieved?

    Jesting aside, you don't need to know much - as Pro said, they'll tell you what is required during your courses. It's always advisable to have read into it before though, as the courses are usually death-by-powerpoint during which you'll have what's on screen read to you, just incase you can't read it for yourself, then with very little time to revise, a test.

    I assume if you're at the fitness stage then you'll already have sat and passed the aptitude testing; in which case you've been deemed worthy of risking investment on (so far). If you're interested, I'd suggest trying to find out how electricity is produced/ distributed, then maybe apply that to how it's done on an aircraft - and with what contingencies and what they do/ why they do it. Don't go all out on the academics (maths/ physics), look more into it without doing calculations if you can if you're not too good with that kind of thing.


    Dont worry, Ive done one day of dedicated Avionics so far in my 10 months. You may not do much in depth stuff till your FT course which isn't till about 3 years after you join.

    Seconded to mbro in your first 18 months all you are really is a "liney" (you may have heard the phrase). In a nutshell you mainly do flight servicings (making sure the aircraft is in the correct state for its next departure) Arrvial and Departure procedures and a few other little bits and bobs. You do occasionally do rects (rectification) but your heavily supervised and usually its nothing major! However I have got in on a few gucci jobs (High power ground runs are fun!) you've just got to show your enthusiastic to learn and work!
